Help with GP question!

'In the end, it is really grades that matter in education.' Do you agree?

I'm more confident in the argument that supports the statement but for the other side of the argument, i'm not too sure. Please help! Thank you.

Re: Help with GP question!

Hmm, can try to define what matters in the statement. Matters may assume the meaning of success in life and job or career. It can also be development in character. But if you settle for success in life, you have to clarify what is success in life like getting stable job and stuff and how education helps in that

However there are also a lot of cases whereby people with bad grades and dropouts having a successful career like bill gates dropping out of Harvard. Try to explain why bill gates chose to dropout and why he was still a successful man with great career. Bring out other how relevant is school education which places a lot of focus on grades and it might not be suitable for other kinds of students that cannot adapt to the strict grade by grade system and use bill gates or other well- know people as example to support your arguments.

I think lastly you have to try to weight and decide to what extend will education still effective in helping the student to achieve the goal (depends on what you define for matters, here we stick to successful career.) State in what conditions and maybe students suitable for grade system and suggest how changes can be made in the grade system to help other students that do not fit into the system so well.

Re: Help with GP question!

My argument would be that grades can only get us so far. But what we want is also a society with conscience - one that is morally conscious and ethical.

We see smart people who are very corrupted. Recently there's a trader called Rajaratnam in the States who is extremely intelligent, but he, sadly, put his intelligence to the wrong use by committing insider trading.

That's why we see that education nowadays is not only preoccupied with academics itself; but that it focuses on all aspects, ranging from moral to physical as well.

Re: Help with GP question!

maybe talk about DSA, NAFA, CCA, arts education, etc.? e.g. DSA is based on other talents and NAFA and sports school also recognises other talents. say that the sg govt. is slowly opening up to the true meaning of education, realisign that we need not only good grades, but other things as well...
It's just how i would do it. sorry if i got it wrong

Blacktoast has a point here. But to extend the analysis, I would ask why the government is coming to the realisation that we do not only need good grades. I think it has to do with wanting to instill in us, a deeper understanding and appreciation for our culture..

Re: Help with GP question!

For the other side, developing our cognitive skills is just as important as getting the grades. The process of critical thinking and the methods of application are some of the important skills that we can pick up via education. They are important in life as we can make informed choices and adapt to different situations when the need rises. When you go to work, the paper count for nothing unless you make it count by proving that you are able to make full use of these skills to achieve success in the harsh working environment.
