i don't use sawdust. haha. so i don't know. it's ok if you don't use it. but you will need to reinforce the clay with something else instead. ya. that's why the sawdust is used, to reinforce the paper clay.

Re: Help Needed from those hu makes their own dolls

You can buy sawdust at sagacity or art friend, but it's labelled 'woodland scenics earth' or something like that. It's supposed to be used as terrain flocking for dioramas and is very expensive at $7 for a small small bag.

What I did was, I bought a cheap wooden plank from art friend, and used a rough file to make my own sawdust. I think I can do 10 chin ups now after all that work.

i haven't used anything but paper clay right now. what i will be using to coat the outside is this eh thing(i don't know what it's called in english. in chinese is bai2 hui1) cos it's a)strong lol, b) waterproof(cos clay can dissolve back into shapeless lumps even after it dries. as in what you have sculpted will be totally ruined if you put it in water for long enough), c) doesn't have "hair" like stuff on the surface when it dries(cos clay have)

frankly, i don't know where to buy this, cos it was found in my house. it's used for mending cracks(as in covering them up plus fill in the crack) in cement. like my wall, and basin lol. err yeah.

wall putty?

the hair is paper fiber. High end clay has less. The best is Padico's Premier clay... it's almost plastic smooth.

Re: Help Needed from those hu makes their own dolls

since you all are so nice to me, I'll let you in on this.

Sagacity sells La Doll Premix. Very very cheap. Buy lots to encourage them to restock often. This is the one I use, it's a mix of premier and la doll, so it's very strong.

Creative hands at taka sells La doll normal, and premier. Prices are about 133% that of sagacity's premix.

If I had known this I wouldn't have bought new fando all the way from japan.

If successful, I'll go and buy the La Doll clay, but moz probably I'll buy beforehand. Thanks for the info. I'm havin trouble with the styrofoam currently. My styrofoam not thick enough. When stick wif glue, still hard to cut, cuz I'm bad at craft and don't realli noe how to cut it. I can cut the front view. But I don't know how to make the styrofoam to havin the shape of it havin the front shape and the side shape tgt. Sorry, I don't reali know how to explain my situation. I'm juz havin serious prob with the styrofoam cutting. Hai.

i think i know what you mean. the front view and side view is drawn just so you know roughly how to cut. as you cut, you should look at the 70% (ehh, as in side view like, but you can see both eyes) and look at the jawline, and see what needs to be cut. also look at it from the bottom, and make sure the cheeks, forehead etc are in correct proportion. basically, it's just keep looking at it from different angles to trim. lol, do you get what i'm saying? (i draw pretty often, so the cutting part and getting the shape right was pretty easy for the head...)

Re: Help Needed from those hu makes their own dolls

i tried cutting and the shape was not ideal. I tink I'll have to remake it again. The body was weird. I get what you mean. It drawin the front view of the body and the side view of the body at the side of the styrofoam rite? But when I cut it, then can't. As in I cut the side view of the body first den cut the front view. But then it turned out quite diff and ugly. Any ideas on how to make the styrofoam smooth too? I tried usin the sandpaper to file it. Any more advice on how to cut the styroam?

Re: Help Needed from those hu makes their own dolls

Don't sand styrofoam!
You'll end up with a snowstorm in your room, and the particles stick all over the place because of static electricity.

No need to smooth the styrofoam. Smooth the clay layer on top of it.

Re: Help Needed from those hu makes their own dolls

lol sand styroform? don't need la. not smooth doesn't matter, since it's all going to be raked out and thrown away after the clay dries.

i cut styroform with a penknife. just like tilt it and slice the styroform. yes, SLICE. yeah, that's one way to make it smooth, by slicing it. but don't really need to.

as for your problem, can i see a picture(front and side view) of it. might be able to give better advice if i know what exactly it looks like lol.

slice with a slight sawing motion...

Re: Help Needed from those hu makes their own dolls

Ok. Erm. I went to buy the styrene cutter todae. It wud be easier to cut. Went to sagacity. The La Doll Premier is 8 dollar plus for 300g ( nt the pink colour packagin). They left one there, so I never buy. Went to creative hands and bot it instead. It's the pink packagin plus it's around 500g(12 plus) The shopkeeper say it seems like 1kg to him, but I highly doubt that. Shall post the pic later. Btw the webbie ( the jap translated one) they use chiesal and file the styrofoam. Ya, when I used a sandpaper to file, it actualli snowed in SINGAPORE!! Haha. So when I was filing the styrofoam yst on christmas nite, I had a 'white' christmas. LOL. >_<

Re: Help Needed from those hu makes their own dolls

where's the neck?

and the head is just a ...ball shaped thingie. it looks pretty okay to me. other than the weird proportion of arms and legs. what's wrong with the cutting?

(by the way, you don't need to make the legs and arms so shapely(??) yet. can just be cylinders right now. shape the clay instead.)

P.S.: and i bought the la doll clay at Sagacity. the only one left. lol. and isn't the one at creative hands also 300g only?
