HELP!! Travelling tips [to China in sept]

hello, thanks for reading my thread. i'm not experienced in travelling so i figured it'll be wise to ask around for some tips, guides n advises..

this is my 2nd time travelling oversea. this time, i have to go to guang zhou (Panyu) for 3weeks.. the sch mentioned that we'll be going on sept 6..
i'm very new to travelling so i have no idea how to check the season/ weather in china.... but my friends told me it might be autumn..

so i need advise on what to bring to keep warm, what to wear there.. i know a thick coat will do the trick. was wondering if anyone know any shop that sell coats at reasonable price. n i hav no idea how much a normal no-brand coat cost.. (price range)

i see shops like "Winter Times" sell coats. but isnt that abit overboard? or are ppl all wearing winter clothing during autumn? sorry, i'm totally clueless about seasons..

and i would appreciate it if you can tell me anything i have to avoid in china too. (like food/ traffic etc)

thanks so much >///< ur help is appreciated
