How to choose a violin?

Hi,
i've always loved the sound of a violin n plan to someday pick up the instrument.
so i was thinking how do i go about choosing a violin when i have no experience n ability to play it yet?

i mean i will need an instrument b4 i can go for lessons right?
i read up on things to note, but the webpgs all say tht it is impt to play the violin
prob is for a complete beginner, isn't it a bit impossible to play the violin n expect to like the sounds coming out?

nt tht the violin is bad, but i know tht the sounds depend alot on the musician. the angle of the bow n the strength n such.
soo i'm actually expecting a SCREEECH kind of sound if i put the bow to the strings then no?

ahhh, the post got soo long.. T.T

I was thinking of taking up the violin mayb next yr soo any advise?

Re: How to choose a violin?

go to music school and find teacher to learn from, learn by yourself is difficult, a lot of things to take note
but ask teacher first how to buy, otherwise u buy the wrong size or wrong one. buy a cheap one first then upgrade

Re: How to choose a violin?

for selecting of violin, best to approach the violin store owner.. since if they deal with violin, they probably have some experience with violin. there are different sizing of violin for different body built and the price itself well, if youre a beginner, its better to get a cheapo violin lest you get sick of it.

the tone of the violin depends on many factor. something you can manipulate is of cos posture, positioning, fingering etc. once you've master all these, comes with violin variation. the more you pay, the better the wood, the better the sound quality.

its possible to expect sounds to come out as a beginner, though most of the time it would be screeching sounds due to poor positioning of finger and bowing.

Re: How to choose a violin?

100+ for toy violins , meaning those for fun and the sound like sh!t.
400+ for a quite so so decent violin.
2k and above for a super mello sound.

You should get a full size violin, if u want to get a easy to use violin first, try getting 2nd hand ones.
Because starting u will get alot scratches and stuff like that.

Angling problem at the frog of the bow will result a screech when you play your violin. and of course, your trembling of your hands when you first started.

You can try Tong Ming Xi, they sell pretty good violins at affordable prices, and they have professional luthiers to advice you on choosing the right violin.

Re: How to choose a violin?

I went to Play Gallery at United Square recently. They are having a sale of violins up to 30% discount this week.

Re: How to choose a violin?

for handcrafted violins, try www.solistrings.com
the lady is a musician herself, and she selected the instrument quality herself, changed good strings and even throw in a rosin worth $35. you know, most music stores throws in a dollar rosin. Love her instruments and service!
