Total SGC$: 42.00 | how much to bring to Tokyo trip?
Will be going to Tokyo for a week on mid-Dec'09.
As the yen rate is decreasing, would like to go to the money-changer , but do not know how much yen should I bring ? Know that things are very expensive in Japan.
Accomodation is being sponsored , but need to pay for the meals only.
How much does one meal cost over there?
Pls Advise |

When I was in Tokyo, average price for meals were like SGD 20+- .
Meals aren't really that expensive unless you go to those very high class restaurants.

if you're going to disneyland, you will really need lots of money.
the ticket already costs about 100++ per pax.
and they really have super cute stuff in their souvenir shops & most of the souvenirs are rather expensive.
whereas, for serious shopping, like if you're into designers' stuff, then you should bring more.

Bring as much as u can. Using a credit card in Japan is near impossible. I tried and they had to manually print out the numbers and call up the bank. Its very safe in Japan to carry large sums of money. U can carry wads of 10,000 yen bills in your hands openly and nobody will touch u.

I didn't go to asakusa but since you're in Japan, any Japanese food will just be as yummy. Quote:

Yes some touristy areas in Tokyo are ok with credit cards. But I'm talking about the more non-tourist shops. I'm sure u won't go there and shop at Gap or Kinokuniya right? The shops inside 109 certainly don't accept cards, but I'm not sure about now. The last time I went there they don't accept.

Of course, use cash to pay for souvenirs at stalls or markets & etc.

If u don't want to spend so much on meals, go to supermarkets or minimarts like Lawson or Family Mart and buy those packed lunches for 500 yen. Ask the cashier to atatamarimasu for u and you're set! Its filling and delicious! |

Since you're in Japan, you should eat Japanese cuisine & not other kind of food ! |

From your perspective, looks like you want to save a bit of cash. $2000 should cover it, but please don't eat anything at Disneyland, its a rip off. I also recommend you go to Disneysea, since there isn't a Disneysea anywhere else. If you do go to Disneysea, you have to go to the mermaid's lagoon, or the little mermaid place. Its seriously...beautiful there.
And like all other Disney theme parks, its best if you see the place at night when the lights come on - Truly magical. You'll be going there via a Mickey Mouse train, so use some of the time to plan what you want to do and where you want to go.
Regarding food, I find the best places to eat are not necessarily expensive, but they are places which are crowded. Same logic that applies to Singapore really haha. Anyway you don't have to look very hard for good quality and cheap Japanese cuisine, neighbourhood ramen and sushi shops offer heaven compared to the Sakae sushis here.
Remember to use all your coins before you return to Singapore, because I made the mistake of not using them and I returned with plenty of 500yen coins - Owch.

last yr on my vacation in japan, i avoided shops selling meals above 1000 yen
there are shops with rates around 600~700 yen for a set meal...well, it's pretty budget to me kinda but the price to me is relatively reasonable
if u can get a good deal, around 400 yen meals can be seen but u got to really find them

For Disneyland, u may want to buy food from outside and bring them in..
tt's how i settle my meals then..
cos the meals there can be 2000yen and up..
in general, the food in tokyo around 1000 yen for a normal meal..
but you can also find eateries selling a bento set or ramen for 500 yen, if u search heard enough..
& do bear in mind that transport cost in Japan is not cheap either..
do rem to buy a pass..
then for shopping, if u wanted to buy branded items eg Burberry Blu or Agnes B, it is advisable for you to bring more $$$ over..
so prob bring ard S$1500-2000 over ba..

Speaking of transport, after u leave immigration checkpoint at Narita, remember to get yourself a Skyliner ticket to Ueno. Ask for Kin'en if you're not smoking. If u don't the whole carriage will be filled with smoke and u have to breathe in second hand smoke for 1.5 hours, which is very bad.
Do not take a taxi to Tokyo from Narita. That will cost u half of what u brought to Japan and u have to pay in cash. Don't even take a bus because its slow and if the traffic is bad, its slower. If the weather is bad, it will be a while before u reach Tokyo.
