How to survive the Hungry Ghost month

How to stay safe during the Hungry Ghost month

Avoid swimming during the Hungry Ghost month, says STOMPer kelissa, who believes that there are certain 'rules' one must follow in order to stay safe during this month.

Whether or not you are superstitious, there are some dos and dont's to take note of during the Hungry Ghost Festival, says the STOMPer.

Here is Kelissa's 6-step guide to surviving the Hungry Ghost month:

"1. Avoid swimming during the 7th month. It is believed that the evil ghosts of those who previously drowned might cause you to drown in the waters. Such ghosts need to find victims in order for them to be reborn.

"2. Children and young adults are also advised to return home early and not to wander around alone at night. This belief is due to the reason that the wandering ghosts can possess children easily.

"3. Avoid moving into new homes and opening new businesses this month as it is considered inauspicious and it brings bad luck to new ventures.

"4. Avoid getting married during this month because couples who do so will have a bad ending. Some evil ghosts may cast a bad spell on the couple during their wedding.

"5. Avoid going on jungle trekking and camping trips as chances of injuries, possession and death are high.

"6. Drive very carefully during this month to avoid accidents, as there may be many wandering spirits, who died in accidents previously, that are searching for their next victims so that they can be reincarnated."

How to survive the Hungry Ghost month, 007 style:

(a) Seal off your house from the world and switch on the air-conditioning 24-7.

(b) Buy ear plugs or a home surround sound system.

Re: How to survive the Hungry Ghost month

haha cute~

but if i say i've seen/harrassed by spirits and ghosts to other people, they shun me and think i'm a fruitcake

but in fact, i haven't

i think there should be one more point : avoid breathing in large amount of smoke generated during this period

Re: How to survive the Hungry Ghost month

The above mentioned are all folk belief... if not, tell me which buddhist sutra or taoist scriptures mentioned all these...

if we continue to believe so much of the folklore tales, the chinese religions will definitely be doom one day.

Re: How to survive the Hungry Ghost month

I think the smoke is more dangerous than the ghosts.

Honestly, all this is contributing to global warming and will ultimately kill us faster than the ghosts will ._.

Before global warming kills you, the smoke would've done a neat job.

There's a difference between a legitimate religious practice and using religion as a shield for your laziness and/or selfishness. In fact, there are (often) people stepping over the boundaries granted to them:

(a) People burning their incense outside of their corridors.
(b) Getais singing beyond their legally permitted limit.

While Singaporeans generally want to preserve their peace and embrace their diversity (hence often do not probe practitioners unless absolutely intolerable), respect has to go both sides and parties have to take into account the feelings of one another. Sheer imposition of one's costs on others despite others having already given way is arguably inconsiderate, especially when one crosses the legal line.

Whatever it is, I believe that as much as costs can be reduced, it should be. For instance, if burning of incense need not be held near residential areas, then it should -- as far as possible -- be held at secluded areas. If, on the other hand, it is instituted in the religious dogma, then I have nothing to say but to respect their religion. Still, the Law has to be obeyed at the very least.

Re: How to survive the Hungry Ghost month

problem is, people are blaming on the smokes/complaining about it
smokes are inevitable during burning

i do have incense burners outside of my house for use while burning small amount of offerings
and use those designated incense burner when there is a huge amount of offerings to be burnt

There have to be some give and takes
unless it happens everyday and the smoke is forever around

Why not view it from the point of view of a non-believer? There are concerns over long term health risks as well as immediate discomfort and irritation. Make it a massive scale burning and see if you can empathize with non-believers.

I've always held the belief that respect should go both ways. Empathy is what will reduce unhappiness and conflict. As far as I know, the private burners are illegal -- residents are not allowed to burn incense on their corridors. Correct me if I'm wrong and I'd learn something new.

Don't give me that "give and take" bullshit.

All I see is generous understanding and compassion on the side of non-believers. (Unless absolutely intolerable.) Think about the instances where the police has to be called to stop getais from their inconsiderate midnight blasts. All I see is some people going under the cover of religion and using "we must respect religion" as an excuse without considering the thoughts and feelings of others.

Note me right:

(a) I have nothing against any religion.
(b) All I'm advocating for is mutual respect and understanding.
(c) I am saying that believers and non-believers should respect and obey the law.

Must things necessarily turn ugly before things finally improve?

I don't think so. If it is illegal, it would have been banned or most likely a big portion of people will be fined for burning incense on corridors, if it is illegal.

Till this day, people still burn incense on their corridors.
