I WAS abused by my husband for years.
That's what a Malaysian senator has told a syariah divorce court hearing her application to end her 23-year marriage.
'In October 1997, he pushed me until I fractured my hand. In November 2001, he hit me until I bled. I was hospitalised for a week,' Senator Hayati Onn (left) told the hearing at the Lower Syariah court in Klang yesterday, reported the New Straits Times.
'There were also times during our fights when he would use a knife. Once, he kicked a shoe which hit me.'
However, Senator Hayati admitted under cross-examination that she had never lodged a police report about any of the alleged incidents.
Senator Hayati also alleged that her husband made her perform all the household chores and cook his supper before permitting her to attend to her duties as a politician.
'He would make me do all kinds of things, like fry an egg for him before I could leave the house,' she told the court.
Senator Hayati also accused her husband, Mr Mohd Suffian Abdul Aziz, an engineer, of not supporting the family financially.
'He was pampered by my father, who gave him a car and shelter as I was the eldest daughter,' she alleged.
'He would also ask me for money to play golf.
'I was the one who was paying our house rent and utility bills. I even had to settle his debts with Ah Long (loan shark).'
Senator Hayati also claimed that her husband was jealous of her public profile and interrogated her about her schedule.
'My job requires me to mingle with people, but he would question me. He would also check on me at meetings just to see who I was sitting with. At times, he would also make it difficult for me to attend a function,' she alleged.
She claimed that when she returned home late from events, 'he would call me names like 'whore' and 'slut'.'
'He knew the nature of my job when we married and I don't understand why he can't accept my profession now,' she said.
Senator Hayati said that problems emerged in the marriage 10 years ago, 'but I always told myself I would give him another chance to change for the better,' she told the court.
'I also thought about the welfare of our three young children. But the past few years have been horrible. We argued almost every day and everything I said was wrong.'
She said she was filing for divorce now because the children were grown up and able to think for themselves.
She added that she was now living with her parents and her husband had been renting a home of his own since March.
The hearing resumes on 19 Jan. | Source
