HOW THE IGP WORKS & CALCULATION OF UNIVERSITY ADMISSION SCORE

Source: Brightsparks (http://forum.brightsparks.com.sg/showthread.php?t=4225)

Assumptions Made in IGP Statistics
The Indicative Grade Profile assumes GP and PW to both have the grade of C.

Calculation of University Admission Score (for Standard subject combination)
Local universities take into account all six subjects (3 H2, 3 H1; in a case of a student with 4 H2, the H2 with the worst grade will be directly converted to a H1 - i.e. a B in your 4th H2 will become a H1 B).

The subjects contribute to a University admission score.

Each H2 subject has a maximum of 20 points for an A, with a decrement of 2.5 points for each grade (i.e. A-20; B-17.5; C-15 etc.).

Each H1 subject has a maximum of 10 points for an A, with a decrement of 1.25 points for each grade (i.e. A-10, B-8.75; C-7.5 etc.)

Effectively H1 is "halve" the H2. Hence, with straight A's in all 6 subjects, one can attain the maximum of (20 + 20 + 20 + 10 + 10 + 10) 90 points.

Calculation of University Admission Scores (for Subject combination beyond the norm)

Three H2 content-based subjects
Two or three H1 content-based subjects
MTL
GP
PW

Take grades in
Three H2 subjects & best H1 subject (at least one has to be a contrasting subject)
GP
PW

Four H2 content-based subjects
MTL
GP
PW

Take grades in:
Best three H2 subjects, with worst H2 subject counted as one H1 subject (at least one has to be a contrasting subject)
GP
PW

Four H2 content-based subjects
One H1 content-based subject
MTL
GP
PW

Take grades in:
Best three H2 subjects, with worst H2 subject counted as one H1 subject (at least one has to be a contrasting subject, or
Best three H2 subjects and one H1 subject (at least one has to be a contrasting subject)
GP
PW

Knowledge & Inquiry (KI)
Three H2 content-based subjects
MTL
PW

Take grades in:

KI, counted as two H1 subjects (one in place of GP and one for H1 requirement)
Three H2 subjects
PW

KI
Three H2 content-based subjects
One H1 content-based subject
MTL
PW

Take grades in:
Three H2 subjects, & better of H1 subject or KI as H1 subject (at least one has to fulfil the contrasting subject requirement)
KI as H1 subject (in place of GP)
PW

KI
Three H2 content-based subjects
Two H1 content-based subjects
MTL

Take grades in:
Three H2 subjects, & best of H1 subjects or KI as H1 subject (at least one has to fulfil the contrasting subject requirement)
KI as H1 subject (in place of GP)
PW

Don't worry, the IGPs assume that applicants obtained C for both GP and PW. That'll make it 17.5 + 17.5 + 17.5 + 8.75 + 7.5 + 7.5 = 76.25 which is actually quite easy to achieve.

I hope you are kidding because the cutoff is low but the coursework is insane. I have friends dying inside. Not recommended unless you literally love swimming in chinese classics.

Anyway to add on to how the IGP works.

Basically you have 6 scores to consider. Whether you have 3 or 4 H2s it doesn't matter. Your 4 core subjects maximum score would be counted in this way:

A- 20
B- 17.5
C- 15
D- 12.5
..

20 (H2) + 20 (H2) + 20 (H2) + 10 (H1)

If you take 4 H2s, your weakest H2 would be scaled down to upon 10 as a H1.

Next would be your GP and project work scores

20 (H2) + 20 (H2) + 20 (H2) + 10 (H1) (core)
+ 10 (GP) + 10 (PW)

It is important to take note that the IGPs posted up on the sites are assuming the student has Cs for GP and PW. So if you score As or Bs in both it's a good buffer for your other grades.

When selecting university courses I must stress the importance of your choices. Go around, ask your seniors. Don't pick the wrong course as it determines what you would be doing for the rest of the life.

On a side note: universities have bursary awards too, ranging from 800-4000 (in NTU). Do read up on it, it's quite easy to get and will help you out during your academic year.

Yup! I love Chinese literature a lot! I'm taking it as a H2 A level too! Initially, I wanted to go back to China to study Uni but now I decided to stay in Singapore because the cutoff is lower

Re: INDICATIVE GRADE PROFILES FOR NTU/NUS/SMU FOR AY2013/2014 ADMISSIONS EXERCISE

Just to add on, the IGP isn't reliable for high-demand courses like Medicine and Law. If one gets AAA/A for his content subjects, and C for GP, C for PW, he'll have a UAS of 85.00. The cut-off for Medicine and Law though is usually around 87.50 (not considering applicants who got in using the Exceptional Individual Scheme), so to get into NUS Med, one must achieve BETTER than what the IGP chart shows.

Last year it was still a ABB/B.

I don't really think that it is the lack of job chances though. It is too sharp of a drop.

Even with straight As you can get rejected for law and medicine. They are the most highly sought after courses after all.
