Information regarding Career as a Pilot

Hi Guys,

I'm currently 16, doing my O's at the end of this year.
I really have his career path in my mind which I want and would like to follow.
Basically, I want to be a pilot, being whether in the Commercial Line or in the SAF.

I have certain queries about how I can work all these things out.
Firstly, I read from the MINDEF site and I couldnt really get much information out.

How can I become a pilot?
Do I need to chosen during my NS period?
What kind of a qualification do I need?
How can I go about becoming one?
Would going to JC or Poly matters?

I'm not really worried about my physical fitness part, I'm relatively fit in terms of fitness.
I swim, I run. MY NAPFA has been Gold throughout.

I have perfect eyesight, is that going to give me an edge somewhere?
Does height matters, because I'm only standing at 173. I'm worried that might become a permanent obstacle for me.

I really appreciate whoever that gives me any kind of information.

Lastly, thanks for reading.

Cheers

P.S Im not sure if I posted this in the wrong section. If I did, can any TS kindly shift this to the correct section. Thank you so much

Re: Information regarding Career as a Pilot

You can be try signing on as a pilot in the rsaf before your "conscription" date.
You will be put through a series of tests (air grading) both on your physical and your motor skills test. ( i will not evaluate on the tests)
If you pass these test, you will under go a medical board (the physical portion)

Do note, that the above tests can happen in different orders.

If you pass them, you will go through BMT, and then OCS which is about....9 - 11 months while you draw a regular pay approx 1600-1800 depending on your qualification. diploma gets paid a little better than a levels.

Before commissioning, you will be sent to flight school (i'm not sure if i can say where so i'm not going to =X) where allowance is given for makan and lodging.

Do note, if you pass all the above, you might end up as a

1) Fighter pilot
2) Rotary pilot (heli)
3) Transport pilot

In the future, you can transit over to commercial airlines.
But of course, you need to pass their tests as well.

If you dream is to fly, and ONLY to fly.

I would suggest you take a loan and go take up a CPL commercial pilot license.

If you wan to fly a fighter plane or you wan to be part of our nation's defence force, then join rsaf.

Do pm me if you have any questions.

I may not be able to answer them but i can try helping you find out.

Disclaimer : Accuracy to the info above may not be updated as of today, do correct me if i am wrong in any aspect, just trying to lend a helping hand here =D

Thanks alot.
But from my family's financial abilities and risks.
Taking up a loan for a pilot license isnt exactly easy.
So I was thinking of the signing on with the rsaf, but I heard the chances of getting through there and really slim.
To add on, I'm thinking of going the JC path, not a single bit interested with poly life.

Thanks anyway

Re: Information regarding Career as a Pilot

No prob! But remember this.

You will not only be flying.
Got alot of work apart from flying to do.
And i mean, alot...that has nothing to do with flying.

Anyways, good luck on ur studies! And may you one day fly above our skies!

Re: Information regarding Career as a Pilot

If you want to become a fighter pilot, you don't have to be v tall as the space inside the fighter plane is quite cramp.
