SINGAPORE — Manholes in the United States are round, while those in Singapore are square — which is better and why? If three birds are perched on a line linking two lamp posts, how many are left if one is shot? Odd questions for an interview, perhaps, but these were posed by employers in a social service firm and finance firm, respectively, to their candidates, according to online recruitment company Jobstreet.com.

Wow... Will they ask the interviewers to juggle too, to test them for multitask?

Re: Interviewers turning to ‘brainteaser questions’: Jobstreet.com

Some interviewer will take advantage of the interview to ask interviewees problems the interviewers faced at work and cannot solve. Then they will hire the one who cannot answer or answer wrong and use the solution proposed by the one who answered right.

From a recruitment and interview perspective, brainteasers are still considered an efficient way to determine if the candidate can think quickly and articulate clearly on their feet.

I Bankers interview - which could span from 5 to 8 rounds - have employed this. One question that was posed to me was "How many refrigerators are there in Singapore"

Re: Interviewers turning to ‘brainteaser questions’: Jobstreet.com

I'm just curious as to what employers are looking for by asking these questions? Sure, it may show that the candidate can think out of the box/give novel answers, or maybe they've come across these questions before. But how does this have any bearing on their suitability for the job?

Additionally, has anyone tried out interview skills coaching before? I've always had a problem with interviews and I was wondering if coaching will come in useful.

Thanks guys!

Re: Interviewers turning to ‘brainteaser questions’: Jobstreet.com

Its not the answer they are looking for but rather your thought process and logical reasoning. For example how many refrigerators are there in Singapore - they dont expect you to know the answer and fail (I am pretty they dont know it either) but rather the process of deriving the answer is important - for example you would consider the number of households in Singapore and what % of these households are high income earners or large families and thus have more than refrigerators.
