Is there addiciton in your family?

Do you have anyone in your family who battles an addiction? How do you deal with it and is there anything the family is doing to try to help?

Re: Is there addiciton in your family?

If you are talking about the drugs addiction than its really hard for a family to control over a person that is drug addicted. And also most of the time if you don't support that person or ignore that person. He try to do some criminal activity to buy drugs for its satisfaction.

Re: Is there addiciton in your family?

Yes, my sister used to be a drug addict. She got mixed with the wrong crowd in her new school and from a soft-spoken and well-mannered girl, she became a completely different (bad) person. She would sell anything she could find at home and she stopped respecting my parents and everyone else in the family. We put her on rehab, twice, and sent her abroad to be away from her "friends." She's been cleaned after that and has now a loving family of her own.

Re: Is there addiciton in your family?

It's usually always bad friends that make bad people. Instead of teaching family members to stay away from drugs, tell them to stay away from bad friends.

My dad used to be a heavy smoker until me and my brothers ganged up on him when we were in primary school and threatened to make him choose between loving his children or loving his cigarettes.

Clean man since then.

My dad is a heavy smoker. No amount of complaining from me would change him. :-(

Re: Is there addiciton in your family?

Addiction is very prominent in my family. Almost every other person in my family is either a drug addict or an alcoholic. Sometime the best thing a family can do for an addict is nothing at all. Until the addict hits a rock bottom they will never get better. Tough love is often the best approach. "I love you too much to help you kill yourself".

Re: Is there addiciton in your family?

Only one, my maternal grandmother has an addicting to gambling. The saddest part is not only is she addicted but she's become a compulsive liar to cover up her habit. My mother and grandfather have tried to help by getting her to talk to her doctor and finding information about groups who can help those struggling with a gambling addiction but unfortunately they can't force her to accept help, as organizations and even her doctor need her permission to move ahead with a program.

My dad used to smoke, but he quit about three years ago. My mom still smokes, but she was able to cut down on cigarettes a little bit by using an electronic cigarette. I try to remind my mom from time to time to stop smoking. Fortunately, my siblings and I didn't get this habit. We are all non-smokers.

Re: Is there addiciton in your family?

I think we all are addicted to something. Some addictions have more severe consequences however. There is indeed someone in my family who has a severe addiction (my relationship to him i wish not to disclose). It's bad though, and i wonder what we can do about it because there are times when he just disappears for years and we cannot find him. In those times, the most help we can give him is prayer.

Re: Is there addiciton in your family?

Hardcore gambler & compulsive liar. Yes, this person is my father. An irresponsible man who boldly accused us of not caring enough for him when he had made minimal contribution to the household, cheated my mum of her jewellery & money to repay his debts & indulged in further gambling session.
Built up frustration & simply tired of receiving multiple phone call threats, SMS threats from multiple so-called legal financial companies which operate the same way like those sharks, runners came knocking on our door almost every evening. And this so called father had actually ran away from home since last week, abandoning my mum & I to face those sharks. Even neighbours had also received phone call threats from some vulgar speaking man. And today, best of all, they had started their game. Splashing paint onto my neighbour's door, writing onto the wall with our house unit number & threatening our neighbours to watch out. Well done guys. Let see what they will do next. Police report had been made. Wondered what they will do.
