SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION OF MEDIACORP!
It has been quite some time since Mediacorp has been the monopoly in the mass market free-to-air terrestrial television provider.
MediaCorp has held a virtualised monopoly in the television broadcasting market, and most of the radio broadcasting market for a substantial amount of years. With the liberalisation of Singapore media in January 1,2001 however, SPH MediaWorks, a division of Singapore Press Holdings entered the market. Losses by both companies due to competition led to a merger, and as of 1 January 2005.
At present, MediaCorp runs 6 television channels and 14 radio channels, making MediaCorp the largest media broadcaster and provider in Singapore.
MediaCorp Group comprises of the following divisions:
* MediaCorp TV
* MediaCorp Studios
* MediaCorp TV12
* MediaCorp Radio
* MediaCorp News
* MediaCorp Press
* MediaCorp Publishing
* MediaCorp Technologies
* MediaCorp Raintree Pictures
* Media Research Consultants
* Caldecott Productions International.

Ok I guess all of you have more or less seen Mediacorp shows before. I've been really frustrated over how everytime the Mediacorp CEO would say Mediacorp has been receiving a lot of support and the shows are in popular demand. I wondered how could it be possible with Mediacorp's sub-standard local shows and outdated foreign films and dramas.
I asked all my friends and believe me, ever since Mediacorp became the Monopoly again, I've never heard anyone praised Mediacorp. All of them criticized Mediacorp, even my dad said he had never heard anyone praised Mediacorp. My friends either subscribe to SCV, go for illegal online streaming or even just don't watch Television.
I shall not comment much on local shows, I've already long given up on local shows. Little Nonya may be deemed as a hit in Singapore, but it wasn't really much of a hit. It was one of the few Mediacorp local shows with standard, but after the Little Nonya ended, Mediacorp continued to promote it and boast how successful and popular it is as if they had created a Hollywood Blockbuster. Then the recent shows like Christopher Lee and Fann Wong wedding and the Chinese version of Don't Forget The Lyrics reflect on how Mediacorp's standard has dropped drastically.
Then the outdated foreign films and dramas. Look at the repeated shows they kept showing again and again. One show which left a strong impression on me was
Jingle All The Way (1996). I swear, I had seen this show on Channel 5 many times somewhere near Christmas, most recently 2008. Does Mediacorp has no shame, or is Mediacorp broke?
Mediacorp as the Monopoly in the mass market free-to-air terrestrial television provider, should at least shoulder its responsibility and produce some decent shows for Singapore viewers. For this year, I spent more time watching Youtube videos than Mediacorp. Shouldn't Mediacorp do something, or has being the Monopoly caused Mediacorp's standard to drop drastically throughout the year?
