Japan has reportedly confirmed a total of 80 domestic infections of H1N1 flu.
According to Kyodo news agency, most of the infected persons are high school students and teachers in Osaka and Hyogo prefectures.
The report said that 72 high school and college students as well as teachers and others, are confirmed to have been infected with the new H1N1 strain of influenza A.
The news comes amid fears that the new virus may have taken hold in western Japan, where hundreds are thought to have been infected.
The number of cases has risen quickly in Osaka and Kobe after the first eight domestic infections in Japan were confirmed on Saturday among students who had not travelled overseas.
Local authorities say that more than 1,000 schools and kindergartens in the affected areas will temporarily suspend classes from today.
Movie theatres have been asked to close and some companies told workers to stay home.
