Total SGC$: 1,286.11 | Is Japanese an official language? Quote:
50-year-old executive officer, Victor Koo was passing by East Coast Park on Tuesday (2 January) when he spotted this signboard. According to Victor, who claimed that he is "usually very observant, this signboard was not there the last time he went there some three months ago".
What puzzled Victor though was not that the sign was newly erected but the languages used. Victor told STOMP that what surprised him most " was that the four languages used on the signboard were English, Chinese, Malay and Japanese while Tamil was totally left out".
Victor asked, "What has happened to Tamil? I think this is a very sensitive issue and they should have at least included Tamil as well."
According to Victor, he has seen similar signs like that at other places of interest such as the botanical gardens.
"It just looks like they are advocating Japanese as one of the official languages. So what if they bring in the tourist dollar? Shouldn't Tamil be included as well," added Victor.
He wonders if "Singapore will start having Korean signs since we're going through this Korean wave now".
When STOMP contacted NParks and Singapore Tourism Board, Kong Yit San, Director of Parks (NParks) and James Tan, Director of Resource Development (STB) gave this joint reply: "Multi-lingual signs in some of our key parks are part of an initiative between STB and NParks aimed at creating a visitor-friendly environment for our tourists. The languages are chosen to cater to the needs of the widest range of visitors possible, to facilitate their movement around Singapore. Apart from English, such multi-lingual signs include other languages reflecting the profile of visitors from key markets such as China, Indonesia and Japan. The languages used in these multi-lingual signage will be reviewed from time to time to ensure they serve the needs of our visitors." |

Total SGC$: 925.29 | Not to mention in India, Tamil is actually one of the more minor languages... So why are our indian friends studying tamil? Surely not to do business in India? |

Total SGC$: 375.46 | they are studying tamil because tamil is the mother tounge, it is to preserve the cultural heritage and the language itself.
Just like as chinese, we should be proud of learning and mastering mandarin, and not complaining that mandarin is a difficult subject |

Total SGC$: 1,594.34 | I think it's because Japanese make up a huge percentage of expatriates and tourist who comes here every year. German, France or other Caucasian tourist still have a chance of being able to read English.

Tamil is the main language of Indians, the rest are juz dialects.. Juz like how Chinese is our main language and the rest like hokkien, canto, are juz dialects..
They might as well include Tamil inside, its juz one sentence afterall..
Or if they wanna include japanese, they might as well include all e other different languages.
Which is better? Include Tamil and no complains and watsoever abt it, or include japanese and let singaporeans n tourists from country other than japan feel that they'r being treated unfairly?
Afterall, isnt English an International language? |

I agree with enDlessly....
We should be proud of SG for having so many races livin together in harmony... & this should be the unique part of SG we should show other people..... but it seems that :shifty3: "certain SX TOURXXX BOARD" are not selling this point to other people in the world..... it's making us like a place of no culture, but actually we have tones to show ppl "Jus travel to SG = travelling to lots of place in the world" ...
From the pic above why is it only japanese languages... does tat means only japanese tourists visit ECP? others country tourists don't?
Like in Japan or korea or those other country usin their own languages... it's only those city area they will put english which is the international language for tourists.... in other area... they dun even bother if you understand their language & yet people still visit those places.... and we are thinking wow!... cool! they have their culture.....
We ourselves are not proud & respecting the 4 races languages.... why would other people give a damn about us?:notimpressed2: why do they keep emphasize... 4 races to other people?
No offence... jus my 5cents worth..... XD
