SINGAPORE: Adventurer Khoo Swee Chiow is attempting to break another Guinness World Record – the world's longest journey on skates.
The current record is 4,175km, and Khoo intends to top that by covering 6,000km in 100 days.
Storage solutions provider Brocade is sponsoring Khoo's journey, which begins in Shenzhen on October 16. He will pass through five countries before reaching Singapore in late January next year.
But Khoo has a bigger aim to achieve through his latest adventure – to raise awareness on energy conservation.
"The environmental message is very timely… (roller skating) is a so-called zero carbon emission sport... so everything comes together very nicely," he said.
"It's very impactful for us to use him as a vehicle to drive this keen message,” said Deb Dutta, vice-president of Brocade, Asia Pacific/Japan.
"It all starts with a small step and I think this is a very big step from this perspective. And I'm certain that if we can get the necessary awareness through Khoo's journey then I would think we have succeeded," he added.
Khoo was one of the first Singaporeans to scale Mount Everest in 1998. He also holds the existing Guinness World Record for the longest scuba dive in a controlled environment. - CNA/ac
