Lady Gaga launches Japan relief bid

Lady Gaga launches Japan relief bid

She urged her fans to buy a $5 bracelet from her website and all proceeds will go to support relief in Japan.

WASHINGTON - Superstar Lady Gaga on Friday launched a bracelet to support relief in Japan as top names in the entertainment world offered condolences after the mega-quake and tsunami.

Lady Gaga asked her legions of fans - whom she calls "Little Monsters" - to buy a bracelet on her website saying, "We Pray for Japan," for donations of $5 or more. All proceeds will go to relief efforts, she said.

Other pop stars offered condolences. R&B icon Alicia Keys wrote on her Twitter account that she woke up early in the morning with "a song in my heart," although she was not yet sure what it would be.

"My heart breaks for Japan," she said.

Canadian teen idol Justin Bieber called Japan "one of my favorite places on Earth."

"It's an incredible culture with amazing people. My prayers go out to them. We all need to help," Bieber wrote on Twitter.

Lady Gaga raises US$250k for Japan

Lady Gaga raises US$250k for Japan

Lady Gaga has raised $US250,000 (RM760,000) for earthquake victims in Japan by designing a wristband.

The Born This Way singer urged her twitter followers to buy the $US5 (RM15.30) red and white accessory - which reads "We pray for Japan" in both English and Japanese - before telling her fans, whom she refers to as her 'Monsters', that they have already accumulated the large sum.

She tweeted: "Monsters: in just 48 hrs you've raised a quarter of a million dollars for Japan Relief. It's important we help. X (sic)"

The Asian country has suffered widespread devastation to its north eastern island as a result of the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and after affects on Friday (11.03.11), and Gaga has been among many stars to come forward on the social networking website to help raise donations.

Singer Katy Perry tweeted: "Remember as you go about your day please #prayforjapan & if you are able, text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to Japan's emergency relief. (sic)"

Teen heartthrob Justin Bieber also sent a message to fans, writing: "Japan is one of my favourite places on earth - it's an incredible culture with amazing people. My prayers go out to them. We all need to help."

People can donate to the relief fund via The Red Cross through a variety of methods including the charity's website, Facebook and iTunes.
