Maid jailed three weeks for stealing $1,000 from employer

Maid jailed three weeks for stealing $1,000 from employer

SOURCE: The Straits Times

Four months into her work, an Indonesian maid went into a bedroom of her employer's house in Sembawang Place to look for things to steal.

She found some money in a drawer and took a $1,000 note.

When the March 5 theft was discovered an hour later, her employer suspected Fitri Heniyati was the culprit and sent the 24-year-old back to the maid agency the next day.

The police were not notified. At the maid agency in Yishun Central, Fitri passed the money to a countrywoman called Rohani, who was waiting to be assigned an employer.

The two have been penalised for their dishonest acts.

On Tuesday, Fitri was jailed three weeks after pleading guilty to stealing the $1,000.

Rohani was fined $2,000 on Monday after the 25-year-old pleaded guilty to retaining stolen property.

The court heard that when Fitri handed the money to the other woman, she claimed that it was from a Bangladeshi friend. She asked Rohani to buy some food and toiletries with it.

It was only after these purchases were made that Rohani was told that the money was stolen.

Still, she agreed to keep the remaining $820.

The court heard that Fitri was afraid that the agency's staff might search her.

At 5.30am on Saturday last week, both women packed their belongings and took a taxi to Woodlands to board a train to Malaysia.

They did not have their passports and a police officer at Woodlands Checkpoint suspected they were runaway maids and detained them.

Pleading for leniency, Fitri asked the judge not to impose a long jail term as she wanted to return to Indonesia as soon as possible.

She could have been jailed up to seven years and fined up to $10,000.

For retaining the stolen cash, Rohani, who goes by only one name, could have been jailed up to five years or fined up to $10,000, or both.

As she was unable to pay the $2,000 fine, she will serve the default sentence of one week in jail.

It is better to keep your valuables locked in a safe place. And I wonder if the 2 involved will be blacklisted, preventing them from being maids here locally again.

Her employer didn't report the theft and if she had not admitted it, there will be no case to begin with.
