Man with well-crafted lies cheats tourist into helping him pay excess baggage fee at Thai airport

A Singaporean tourist was convinced into forking out SGD 70 (1,800 Baht) for a fellow Singaporean man in Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport. He claimed to have lost his wallet and needed to pay the excess baggage fee.

Stomper CHEATED said the man managed to clarify her doubts with well-crafted lies, only to be uncontactable when she returned to Singapore.

She wrote:

"I hope that by posting here, I help to bring awareness to the scam and that the man will stop preying on his victims’ compassion.

"On Feb 14, 2014, after I checked in my baggage at the Bangkok Airport (returning to Singapore), my friends and I were preparing to walk towards the immigration.

"Suddenly, a Singaporean man asked, 'Are you Singaporeans? I need help….'

"He sounded extremely desperate, with voice trembling.

"He explained that he is a freelance journalist covering the protest in Bangkok, and had lost his wallet and could not pay for baggage."

The man told the Stomper that he had already checked-in his heavy equipment, and had an airline note stating about 1,800 Baht in baggage fees waiting to be paid. It had an official-looking logo and it was written in Thai.

She told him he could pay for the excess baggage with his credit card, but his wallet was apparently lost on his way to the airport.

The Stomper added:

"He began to show me some identity cards (International Driving License, Journalist card, et cetera …) to 'prove' his identity.

"I believe I'm not a person who's easily cheated, but this man could answer all the questions I posed properly.

"He was clearly prepared to answer everything.

"I took a picture of his International Driving License, and requested him to give me 2 Singapore contact numbers."

One was claimed to be his number, while the other was apparently his father's.

She then walked him to the airline counter but as there was a long wait and her plane was scheduled to leave soon, she decided to hand him the cash, choosing to give him the benefit of doubt.

On hindsight, the Stomper noticed that the picture of the International Driving License she took had a minor spelling error on it, which she believes now that it was probably a fake.

She added:

"The next day (after returning back to SG), I tested the 2 numbers that he gave me. Both were not working.

"Then, I Googled his full name, and found out to my astonishment that he was jailed for cheating more than 10 years ago."

His full name, age and picture had corresponded with the news article on The Straits Times, stating that he was jailed for cheating a maid of $500 in 2003.

The Stomper did not want to automatically assume that he was a liar, and waited for him to liaise her.

He still hasn't contacted her since, and both numbers remain invalid.

Despite that, the Stomper said that if put in a similar situation again, she would still help a man in need on grounds of compassion. She hopes that he will contact her, adding that even though the money was not an extremely large sum, she hopes he will do the right thing.
