MFA advises S'poreans to postpone travel plans to Bangkok

MFA advises S'poreans to postpone travel plans to Bangkok
Posted: 12 April 2009 1820 hrs

SINGAPORE : The Singapore Foreign Ministry has advised Singaporeans to postpone their travel plans to Bangkok to a later date, if they do not have a pressing need to travel to Bangkok and the other areas where a state of emergency has been declared.

Responding to media queries, an MFA spokesman said Singaporeans intending to travel to Thailand should closely monitor news developments there.

Those who decide to travel there are advised to register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at http://www.mfa.gov.sg.

This will enable the MFA and Embassy in Bangkok to contact Singaporeans and render them assistance in case of emergencies.

Singaporeans are also advised to avoid areas where there is a risk of disturbance.

MFA said they should also take the necessary precautions for their personal safety.

During this period of uncertainty, Singaporeans are advised to monitor the local news diligently and be prepared to face inconveniences in their travel.

MFA also encouraged all Singaporeans travelling abroad to purchase comprehensive medical and travel insurance.

On Sunday afternoon, the Thai Government announced a state of emergency in Bangkok, Nonthaburi and some districts in the neighbouring provinces of Nakorn Pathom, Pathum Thani, Ayudhya and Samut Prakarn. MFA and the Embassy in Bangkok are closely monitoring the situation.

Singaporeans who require assistance can contact the Singapore Embassy in Bangkok or the MFA Duty Officer (24-hours) at:

Avoid travel to Thailand

BANGKOK - FRANCE, Britain, Australia and the United States were among countries that issued travel advisories on Monday as Thai soldiers fired automatic weapons in an attempt to control spiraling anti-government protests in the capital.

France strongly urged its citizens in Bangkok 'to stay in their homes or hotels' and recommended postponing of non-essential travel until calm returns.

South Korea called on its nationals in Bangkok and the seaside town of Pattaya 'to return home if they are not on urgent matters.'

A weekend summit of 16 Asian leaders in Pattaya, about 100 kilometres south of Bangkok, was canceled after protesters stormed the venue and leaders were evacuated by helicopter.

Soldiers in combat gear moved into several parts of the Thai capital Monday firing automatic weapons, mostly into the air.

Despite the crackdown, authorities appeared unable to disperse protesters, who are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. There were initial reports of dozens injured.

The US Embassy issued a warden message urging Americans 'to avoid the areas of demonstrations and to exercise caution anywhere in Bangkok.'

Australia advised its citizens to reconsider traveling to Bangkok or surrounding provinces, and to 'exercise a high degree of caution because of the political instability in Thailand and the possibility of political demonstrations.'

'The Australian government is deeply concerned at developments in Thailand,' Foreign Minister Stephen Smith told reporters. 'We urge the political leadership in Thailand to resolve these matters peacefully and in accordance with the law.'

Britain also told citizens to 'urgently review' travel plans to the Southeast Asian nation and 'to avoid any areas where demonstrations are taking place and to stay indoors as far as possible.' -- AP

Re: Avoid travel to Thailand

I think the king's endorsement for the military takeover isn't really right. He should do something about it to tide the crisis over.

Re: Avoid travel to Thailand

I think its rather strange that King Bhumibol has kept so quiet during this period of great turmoil... could it be due to his ill health? Or that he simply feels that its not the appropriate time to intervene? In any case, instability in Southeast Asia is not good for anybody!

Thailand will never become stable if the "Yellow" and "Red" are still in presence.

that is why there are the "Blue" group. ( I reckon they are the army personals, must be someone from elites paying them to pose & act as the 3 party =.= )

Re: Avoid travel to Thailand

I think you should change the headline. "Avoid travel to Bangkok". Other parts of Thailand are safe to travel.
