More Malay social workers wanted
By Melissa Kok

THE lack of Malay social workers able to deal with Malay-Muslim cases has raised the need to train and equip non-Malay social service practitioners with the relevant skills to manage such families.

To beef up social service manpower in the Malay Muslim community and to attract more Malays, the National Council of Social Service has rolled out new training programmes and is working with Muis to tap on returning religious graduates.

'The reality is, we don't have enough. So on the one hand, one of the strategies is really to enhance the number of Malay social workers, but that will take time to come about,' said Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of National Development Mohamad Maliki Osman on Thursday.

Speaking at a seminar for social workers, he said it was thus important to look at ways to increase understanding among non-Malay case workers working with Malay families, given the cultural and religious differences.

There are now about 350 social service professionals working with family service centres (FSCs) across the island, most of whom are non-Malays.

So the chances of a non-Malay social worker assigned to handle a Malay family is high as there were an estimated 10,400 Malay-Muslim families receiving assistance from FSCs, Mosque Clusters and Community Development Councils.
