Moving house is linked to suicidal behaviour in children

Moving house is linked to suicidal behaviour in children

Moving house is bad for children as a study finds it can be so traumatic and distressing some may consider suicide.

Last Updated: 3:03PM BST 01 Jun 2009

A study found that children who had moved house more than three times were more likely to have been suicidal.

A study found that children who had moved house more than three times were more likely to have been suicidal.

Losing contact with friends and uprooting them from familiar surroundings, plus the fact that children may feel ignored during the decisions to move, means they are more likely to make a cry for help suicide attempt, the researchers said.

The team from the University of Aarhus, in Denmark identified all children born between 1978 and 1995 and found that 4,160 children had attempted suicide between the age of 11 and 17 and 79 had been successful.

The children who had attempted suicide where more likely to have moved house frequently when compared with children who had not attempted suicide.

More than half of suicidal children had moved more than three times compared with a third of children who had not attempted to take their own life.

Seven per cent of the suicidal children had moved more than ten times compared to less than two per cent the control group of children.

The study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, accounted for other factors that could influence suicidal behaviour such as birthplace and parents' mental health.

Lead author Ping Qin wrote: "The breakdown of connections with peers, discontinuation of group activities, distress and worries related to the new environment are potentially psychologically distressing events for young children. Frequent exposures to these events can be stressful and confusing and may affect their psychosocial wellbeing, thus increasing their intention toward ending their life if they are unable to cope.

"Children may feel ignored and have no one to communicate with. A suicide attempt may, to some extent, express the need for more attention from their parents.

"Although we could not distinguish whether frequent change of residence was a causal risk factor the findings from this study suggest the importance of stability on children's psychosocial wellbeing.

I think it's more like... totally move away from your previous place. Different neighbourhood, different school and all that :/

Re: Moving house is linked to suicidal behaviour in children

I don't agree with the findings. I moved house about 4 times, non-suicidal, as compared to my partner who never moved house before, he's suicidal.

Re: Moving house is linked to suicidal behaviour in children

i hate to move..packing and unpacking is torturing... hate hate hate..

i think suicidal behaviour just happen on kids.. since they get upset of leaving the current environment and accept new people and environment..fears might be the main cause~
