M'sian wishing tree attracts visitors from near and far
ANN - Wednesday, February 16

Ipoh (The Star/ANN) - Decked in red ribbons and oranges tied to joss papers, the four-storey high wishing tree at Kwan Yin Tong in Ipoh, Malaysia, is a sight to behold.

The tree has been receiving a steady stream of visitors wanting to make their wishes, especially during the Chinese New Year period.

Temple secretary Ho You Meng said visitors threw mandarin oranges tied to long red and yellow joss paper onto the tree so that it would be left hanging from the branches.

"The tree is similar to the famous wishing tree in Hong Kong where visitors also perform the same ritual of throwing mandarin oranges on it," he said.

Ho said more than 1,000 people had visited the temple, which is open daily throughout the year.

Besides locals, Ho said the tree also attracted visitors from Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Taiwan as well as Western countries.

It is believed that the spirit of a Tibetan deity dwells in the tree and is able to grant people their wishes.

Interviewed after the ritual, undergraduate Wong Li Yuan said she had wished to meet someone special this year.

The 21-year-old, who successfully got a fruit to hang from the tree after several attempts, said she hoped her wish would come true.

Not to be left out of the ritual was an Indian family, four of whom would be sitting for major examinations this year.

V. Kavitha, 35, said she brought her children, who would be sitting for their UPSR, PMR and SPM respectively this year to make their respective wishes.

Earlier, state executive councillor Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, who visited the temple, said Perak chief minister Dr Zambry Kadir would visit the temple Thursday at 10.30pm.

"He will be making an important announcement, which will be good news for the temple," he added.
