South Korea's Defense Ministry says it has confirmed that North Korea test-fired 7 missiles that appear to be a short-range type toward the Sea of Japan on Saturday.
The ministry says North Korea launched 2 missiles from a base in Kittaeryong, south of Wonsan on the east coast, around 8 AM. It says 5 more missiles were fired later from the same base.
Ministry sources say the missiles appeared to be a Scud type, a short-range ballistic missile, and are estimated to have flown 400 to 500 kilometers.
The South Korean government strongly criticized the North for the missile launches.
It commented that it is very regrettable that North Korea continues to take provocative actions to raise tension in Northeast Asia in defiance of UN Security Council resolutions.
On Thursday, North Korea test-fired 4 short-range missiles with a range of 100 to 150 kilometers from the east coast toward the Sea of Japan.
South Korean authorities say North Korea recently designated areas northeast of Wonsan as a no-sail zone until July 11th, citing military drills as a reason.
They are continuing to monitor North Korean activities, saying it could fire more missiles.
