Anyone here preparing for the long journey overseas for further studies? If you have any questions regarding packing, preparations, luggage, housing, etc, can ask them here. I could try answering including those who have studied overseas before too

I heard that in several countries like the UK, they allow you to work.
My further education advisor in my school told me that there are students who managed to sponsor themselves via jobs wholely without any scholarships. Exactly how do you find jobs in other countries?
for the States, you are only allowed to work part-time and not full-time when on Student visa. Many apply for part-time jobs as Teaching Assistants, lab assistants, waiters, etc. Shouldn't be difficult to find when you are on campus. Just ask around with lecturers and other seniors who shld be able to direct you....

Hey,I'm wondering what's the cost of living in Australia and how much do I need to prepare if i wanna go there? And i'm currently 17 with only an o levels cert...so do i have to continue with high school if i get there? And what are the school fees like?
The cost of living in Australia is rather high, as having 1 meal outside might cost you $10-20+ so it is advisable to do the shopping and share it among your roommates..And it depends on how many time you wanna return to SG or your air ticket might cost you a bomb!
I am not sure how much it cost to study there but most of my frnd there are born with a silver spoon in their mouth Yes you might have to get into high sch first and den move on to collage and finally U.. Good luck ^^

I'm 17 this year, I want to study at UK and I only have 'N' Level cert. If it is possible, once I move to UK, where do I start schooling? (Definitely not College right despite my age. But then what?). How do I and how much does it cost to apply the whatever visa there is? What about accommodation and work? If what I've just said is what I want to do, does anyone plan on the same thing? (Can go together mah.. can share2 our accommodation and expense... easier right.. P.S. I can cook )
Also, what about National Service and such?

speaking from Melb's side of the story:
Cost of living in Aus is not the highest, but higher than in SG. Like what emolisher said, each meal can set you between $6.50 to $10 or higher. Fast food's not that fantastic either, and about the same price as a normal meal outside. I'd set a budget of $20 a day, which is about $150 a week for food n groceries, though if you cook and share with another person, you can cut that by almost half.
Accommodation in the city is pretty expensive if you're staying alone and prices just rose again. Expect to pay 1~1.2k a month for a studio apartment, or if you're sharing, around 700 to 1k+ for a much bigger place depending on the no. of people and location.
The good thing is that cars are much cheaper than in sg, but if u're a student, chances are you have to pay the car in full. If you're staying in the city, parking is expensive unless your place comes with one, and public transport might be sufficient enough as everything you need's quite accessible.
Uni fees are about 12k+ per semester or 24k a year, and I think it's increasing slightly every year or so, unless you're a PR then that gets cut down by alot. so overall, you'd need a minimum of 50k a year if you're very thrifty, or around 75k a year to live comfortably.
Not too sure with an O lv cert, but I think you'd have to go to foundation school which is like a bridging course for uni, or you can enroll in TAFE, which is something like a poly in sg. Why not complete a diploma here in sg first? You can get exemptions from uni with a dip, which would cut your cost by alot..

hello! most colleges only accept applications from 'A' levels. if you have an 'N' level cert, you may need to apply to high schools / foundation courses before they may let you enter college.
the visa costs S$300++ to apply, and it's kind of complicated :/ you need to get a place in a school first, and show that you have enough money to pay for your living expenses before you can actually apply.
if you apply for a student visa, i think there is a maximum number of hours you can work. i'm not sure about high schools, but most unis offer first-years a guaranteed place to stay.
for NS, i think you have to complete your NS before you go overseas. there is usually no exception to this rule unless you happen to be a PSC or SAF scholar, if i'm not wrong.
Anyway, I think anyone can study overseas as long as they have the
Determination - To keep studying and maintain your level,
Perseverance - Never give up, and always continue onward,
Hardworking Attitude - So as to be able to handle pressure...
Did I mention money? That would probably be the first on the list...

sorry to dig up an old thread but... You need alot more than determination.
I know I had to fight temptations [to club and all that, cause of a lack of parental supervision] and homesickness [for the first half of the year. I'm very attached to my home, so sue me.]
Yes, you definitely need alot of money [i'm referring to melbourne specifically in this case cause I havent been to the other states.] cause yes, as another mentioned, meals there are very very expensive; even groceries are expensive. If you have to live alone [like i had to -.-|||], you're going to have a field year trying to cope without money - it's not possible over there. So get a job, really.
Most jobs there pay around 10-15 bucks an hour with the australian companies; yes it sounds like alot but they'll work you like a cow. Jobs at Chinatown etc, usually only pay 6-8 dollars though, it's shit money for shit jobs, like dessert house, they pay about 9 dollars but your working hours are insane.
Also, forget buying from the larger stores, valley express [melb central] and smith street stock pretty alright clothes at better prices. Don't be tempted to buy the items when they first hit the shelves cause you'll be surprised at the discounts they give at the end of the season.
Anyone need any information about studying in melbourne with the VCE 12 can ask me. Don't ask about Trinity though, I don't know anything about bridging modules; I wasn't eligible for the course. The woes of being PR.

Anything on Brisbane, feel free to ask. But it's similiar to what X had said as above.
Uni frees are dependent on course type and uni. But +/- 3k from what X had said.
Rent and groceries are all similiar. I would say a weekly of 250AUD is the min. But if anyone can hit 200/wk, that's good. 350/wk would be living like king liao.
Legally, you can work 20hours/week. But illegally, you can work till you drop. I've known many who work, off the books. If you work for aussies, they pay you well. But if you work for aisans, you will get squeezed like a rag.
