What do I need to know before buying a NDS?

Okay,to start off,I sometimes do not rely on forums admin to help me in this matter as they provide only basic information such as checking dead pixels,outer covering etc.
So I had to rely on regular users of the Nintendo DS to help me.

First off,I know there's two types of NDS,Normal NDS and DS Lite(not sure of DSi and whether they're the same).
Which one should I get?
Questions
-Can the DS play downloaded games or hackable games?Do all DS require original game cartridges?
-Sequence by size and weight?
-What items are necessary to play/start-up the DS?(battery,game cartridge?)
-How many of each items are needed?
-Important items needed to keep the DS in good shape?

Really appreciate the help.Hope I will finally get a "Nintendo" brand handheld console soon.

The DS by itself cannot. You will have to get a R4 or any other similar cartridges which allows you to play downloaded roms on your DS.

-Sequence by size and weight?
No idea for weight. But DS Lite is the smaller version of DS whereas DSi is the newer version DS with a camera, but is unable to play GBA Cartridges.

-What items are necessary to play/start-up the DS?(battery,game cartridge?)
Battery comes with the DS. Its unlike the old game boy where you use AA batteries. Kinda like your handphone. You will of course need a cartridge to play.

-How many of each items are needed?
If you are going original then you will need cartridges of games you wanna play. If you get a R4, you'll just need the R4 and put the games in it.

-Important items needed to keep the DS in good shape?
probably casing and screen protector

Try to help with my min knowledge..

How much is an R4?Where do I buy it and how do I use it?(is it much like a memory stick?) Its a flash card for u to slot in your sd card to play friendly games. Nowadays i think ppl dun buy R4 already.. cos they only support up to 2GB.. there's acutally alot of other cards like Ak2i, DSTT, etc..

Is there any other problems when playing the DS?(like PSP got bricking problems,firmware problems etc) Dun think DS Lite got bricking this kind.. cos it does not need any modifications like PSP, Wii.. i'm oso new to DSLite..

TS: I live in AMK, my frd bought her PSP from this shop she said not bad, so I went there to get a DS Lite from this shop too, it's located at Jubilee entertainment complex at AMK central, level 1, the shop's name is: Game Connection. But hor they dun accept payment by cards, they only accept cash de, hope I help u

I went there before but did not ever asked about NDS,will ask them on next visit.(if I'm not wrong,beside cake shop right?)

Two options now FunZ or Games Connection.

yah, there's a cake shop there, polar cakeshop? I think so...

btw where's Funz?? I only go to that shop at jubilee or shop online for game cartridges

you can get r4(something like a ds cartridge and buy a memory card to insert in,theres lots of version for r4 too) to download games

ds lite is smaller and lighter than ds

game cartridge of course(if you are not getting r4) battery comes with the ds and you will just need to charge

eh?i dont understand this question. but there should be 2 stylus in the box(the same colour as your ds,of course.).

you can buy the screen protector for the both screen as its not include in the box and the outer cover protector(or case) for the ds.
