New platforms to help strengthen marriages in S'pore

SINGAPORE: To strengthen marriages in Singapore, Marriage Central will be establishing new platforms like community-based activities to reach out to couples.

It will also conduct a study into marriages.

The findings will be used to develop programmes to help couples keep their wedding vows.

A survey revealed that attendance at marriage enrichment and preparation courses among couples remains low.

To tackle this, Marriage Central aims to use innovative ways to reach out to couples who are not attending such programmes.

Ms Anita Fam, chairperson of Marriage Central, said: "It won't be the conventional sort of course where you go to a place, sit and listen to a speaker."

"For instance, you may be strolling through your HDB hub, going to the supermarket and we'll have a roving game there for you. There will be a game or an activity but the things we'll actually have will be geared towards sending out the message of marriage enrichment and marriage preparation," she added.

The general divorce rate has been rising over the years. One group Marriage Central wants to target is couples who have been married for five to nine years, as they make up 32 per pent of divorced couples.

As many in this group cite work as a reason for being unable to attend these courses, special lunchtime talks at workplaces are in the pipeline.

It will also work closely with religious organisations.

Ms Fam said: "We are in the process of doing a marriage preparation kit that is secular, but can be used not only by religious organisations but by different marriage service providers."

A study on mitigating a relational crisis among married couples will also be carried out for the first time.

Through its findings, Marriage Central hopes to recommend and propose programmes that can be tailored to help couples stay married.

Results of the study are expected to be revealed in the first quarter of next year.
