SINGAPORE : A "Place and Train" programme is being developed for aerospace technician positions.

Aerospace industry

When launched, the programme aims to train 300 technicians under the Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) framework over the next two years.

The Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) and NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) are working out the details of the programme.

It was revealed by Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong at an industry event on Wednesday.

He also announced that Rolls-Royce and SIA Engineering have been working closely with WDA to establish a common view of training needs and broaden the existing aerospace WSQ structures.

More details on this will be announced soon.

Mr Gan said such close collaboration and development of high value-added skills by industry players for the industry is the way to go.

This will boost the quality of the talent pool, help Singapore move up the aerospace manufacturing value chain, and contribute to our goal of becoming a prime destination for aerospace-related training services for the region.

This will also enable Singapore to maintain our foothold as the leading regional aerospace hub.

Since 2008, more than 1,000 maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) workers in the aerospace sector have undergone training under the WSQ framework.

While progress has been made to expand the talent pipeline, Mr Gan urged the aerospace industry to make improving productivity its immediate priority.
