Night Safari welcomes 3 rare clouded leopard cubs

SINGAPORE: The Night Safari recently welcomed the addition of three cubs to its rare clouded leopard family.

The three new clouded leopards were born in April under Wildlife Reserves Singapore's breeding programme (Picture: Wildlife Reserves Singapore, Night Safari)

Wildlife Reserves Singapore said the three cubs were born in April under its breeding programme.

The cubs came about a year after the park's first successful clouded leopard birth in May 2011.

Their parents, Tawan and Wandee, are from Thailand's Khao Kheow Open Zoo.

The leopard get its name from the cloud-like patterns on its coat, which helps it blend with the shadows of the forest.

It's one of the world's rarest and most secretive wild cat species.

And it's not easy to breed the leopards in captivity, as the cats often display aggressive courtship behaviour, which could result in the death of the female during mating.

Visitors can check out the cubs at the Night Safari's Leopard Trail, one of the four walking trails in the park.

Subash Chandran, assistant director of zoology at the Night Safari, said: "We are very pleased that our efforts have paid off once again with the birth of this second litter. For a species of big cat facing many threats, every little kitten counts. We hope that this birth will go towards sustaining and increasing the population of clouded leopards both in captivity and in the wild."

Re: Night Safari welcomes 3 rare clouded leopard cubs

just a word of warning for those who are thinking of going to the Night Safari. it's not worth the time and money if you not a tourist. i just went this June, not even during weekend.and it is a sea of people, long queues, esp for the animal show. minimum 1hr in queue. in the semi-dark, also not able to see much of the animals who are so-called more active at night.
