Some Muslim trainee docs in UK say: No lectures on alcohol and sex diseases for us
WE won't attend lectures on alcohol-related diseases. And no classes on sexually-transmitted illnesses for us either. So say some Muslim trainee doctors in the UK.
They say these topics offend their religious beliefs, reported London's Sunday Times earlier this month.
A small number of Muslim medical students have even refused to treat patients of the opposite sex.
One male student would rather fail his exams than examine a female patient.
Dr Shazia Ovaisi said of her classmate: 'He was academically gifted... (but) during the final exams, he was supposed to treat a female patient in hospital. He refused to do it, even though it would have been a very basic examination, nothing intrusive.
'As a result, he failed. I was quite disappointed because I don't see anything in our religion that prohibits us from examining male and female patients.'
Both the Muslim Council of Britain and Muslim Doctors and Dentist Association said they were aware of students opting out but did not support them, reported the Evening Standard.
This incident will intensify the debate sparked earlier by the revelation that Sainsbury's supermarket permits Muslim cashiers to refuse to handle alcohol purchases.
