SINGAPORE : Community Development Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said childcare-related leave for fathers is provided for under the law, even though paternity leave, specifically, is not.

Parents and children conduct science experiments with everyday objects

He was writing in response to a question by Ang Mo Kio GRC MP Lee Bee Wah, on whether the government would consider adapting the Swedish system of offering extended paternity leave to encourage men to take more responsibility in looking after their children.

The minister said such an approach does not come free, and that the burden would ultimately fall on tax-payers.

He added that figures show more fathers are playing a bigger role at home.

Last year, there were over 25,000 claims made to the CPF Board regarding government-paid childcare leave taken by fathers. That's only a little less than the 27,000 claims for mothers.

Data from the Ministry of Manpower shows that 47 per cent of companies voluntarily offered paternity leave in 2008, compared to 40 per cent in 2004.

Dr Balakrishnan expects the figure to rise, as employers become more enlightened on work-life balance.
