Research says the Kuala Lumpur-Klang motorcycle lane can cut down fatalities involving motorcyclists.

PUTRAJAYA - The longest motorcycle lane in Malaysia, from the north of Perlis to the southern tip of Johor, will be built in stages from this year to 2020.

The lane is expected to cut by half road fatalities from the present 6,800 cases, said Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh.

He said the 3m-wide lanes would run parallel to Federal Route 1.

"It will be built in areas with high fatalities first before it is expanded nationwide."

Based on research carried out by his department and the Malaysian Road Safety Institute, the Kuala Lumpur-Klang motorcycle lane cuts down fatalities involving motorcyclists by up to 85 per cent yearly.

"The physical segregation has proven to be the best measure to reduce the increasing number of fatalities among motorcyclists."

He added that the measure was part of road safety measures under the National Key Results Area introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to reduce road fatalities.

Last year, 6,847 lives were lost and 60 per cent were motorcyclists. At present, seven million motorcyclists are registered with the Road Transport Department.

Suret said the dedicated motorcycle lane could not be built earlier due to budget constraints but the Works Ministry has set aside 10 per cent of its yearly budget for these lanes.

A typical motorcycle lane is 2.5m- to 3.5m-wide with proper crash barriers suitable for motorcycles below 250cc and it should be properly lit.

To cut cost, Suret said the lanes would be built along federal roads as they already had proper street lighting and "it also has proper access routes and there will not be a need to build alternative routes".

Motorcycles of 250cc and above engine capacity would not be allowed to use the lanes as the impact during a crash with smaller motorcycles would be the same as hitting a car, he said.

The department will also continue its ongoing advocacy campaign to educate rural folk not to ride without a valid licence or get them to use helmets.
