World Cup journey over for Lions

http://www.tnp.sg/content/world-cup-journey-over-lions

World Cup Qualifiers
Third Round

JORDAN 2
(Ahmed Hayel 15, Amer Deeb 65)
SINGAPORE 0

IT'S OFFICIAL.

After a 2-0 defeat away to Jordan early this morning (Singapore time), the Lions are out of the running for a place in the fourth round of World Cup qualifiers.

Perhaps fittingly, on the night where the mathematical possibility of qualification for the next round was finally erased, Singapore were again undone by a crucial refereeing blunder.

Raddy Avramovic's men have been on the end of poor refereeing decisions in their previous three qualifiers, and the trend continued in Amman.

In the 57th minute and already trailing to a first-half Ahmed Hayel strike, the Lions found the back of the net when Shi Jiayi's deft header off Shahril Ishak's cross nestled in the corner of the Jordanian goal.

But as Jiayi sped off to celebrate what would have been his side's equaliser, assistant referee Matthew Cream had already raised his flag to signal that the Singapore midfielder was offside.

Television replays, however, showed that Jiayi was clearly onside when the ball was played in.

Already reeling from the decision, the visitors were dealt a further blow just eight minutes later, when winger Amer Deeb raced through to put the home side 2-0 up.

With Jordan dominating most of the proceedings, it was clear Singapore's journey in the qualifiers would not go any further than the third round.

And while the Lions defended stoutly for the remainder of the game, Hayel's goal in the 15th minute and Deeb's second-half strike proved to be enough for Jordan to qualify for the fourth round of qualifiers.

More reports in The New Paper on Sunday.

SINGAPORE: Lionel Lewis, Juma'at Jantan (Sevki Sha'ban 73), Ismail Yunos, Daniel Bennett, Shaiful Esah, Mustafic Fahrudin (Hafiz Rahim 91), Noh Rahman, Shi Jiayi, Shahril Ishak, Fazrul Nawaz, Aleksandar Duric (Firdaus Idros 71)

Seriously? Anyone got link to that 'offside goal'?
