Re: O LEVEL LANGUAGE HELP

it is never too late.
read newspaper everyday. it will definitely help you.
the only way to improve is to read, speak and write more.

Re: O LEVEL LANGUAGE HELP

Dude, if you want your language to improve, use it more often.

Just like how active I've been on the forum. I make sure that all my posts are as grammatically correct as possible. At times, I make mistakes and kind souls correct me (and I gift them of course ). I take note of the mistakes and ensure that such mistakes will not appear again.

Try it! It works! Rake up any old posts that I posted and compare it with the ones I have now. The old posts are filled with stupid grammar errors that are so embarrassing. Though I still make occasional grammar errors, it's not as bad as previously.

Try it. Just 3 months and you'll see the results. :]

Thank You!
However, I've already read To Kill a Mocking Bird as my Literature Book or O levels.
I'll try to pick up the others.

Re: O LEVEL LANGUAGE HELP

I think for learning languages, vocab is impt!!! Keep a 'Word Bank' book each for Chinese and EL. Look up the dictionary, check the meaning, learn abt its usage, etc. Reading 'The Straits Times' and 《联合早报》forum (a.k.a. 社论 in Chinese) sections wld be useful as well! Reading alone will nt suffice, u'll also nd to attempt past yr papers / other schs' papers, and ask ur teacher to grade ur essays. Arrange consultation sessions with ur teachers. Jiayous, there's still quite a bit of time before 'O' Levels! =)

Re: O LEVEL LANGUAGE HELP

Thanks. I'll try that.
I'm already sending in additional essays for my teachers to mark. I seem to be improving little by little.

Re: O LEVEL LANGUAGE HELP

Heartening to see independent hard-working students.

For compo, you've got to read and practise. For this you've gotta approach ur teachers.

For compre, do the qns very carefully, don't miss out any small details that may contribute to the full picture of the answer. (VERY IMPT!)

For summary, I used to think that drafts are a waste of time, but they are not. I improved from a 18-20 upon 25 to 20-23 upon 25. Choose points and rewrite them. Then prioritise them ans make them flow as a passage.

Meanwhile, read alot. You will find that English is crucial in getting you into universities, into scholarships, into jobs later on in life. And JC requires alot of current affairs knowledge so its good that you start reading now.

Argumentative if you can argue well and come out with lots of points (both sided) and counter-points. Needs quick brainstorming abilities. Narrative if you have a huge vocab bank and good grammar.

Re: O LEVEL LANGUAGE HELP

Most will go for narrative for safety purposes. You should write narratives, no use attempting argumentatives when you cant handle writing narratives.

Just my 2 cents' worth. Goodluck

Re: O LEVEL LANGUAGE HELP

I totally understand your point that languages are unlike sciences and maths, cos you just have to read some more to get 2 more points. In things like compo, you need a lot more for that 2 more points, like better vocab and story, etc.

To improve your english, speak more english with your friends, especially the ang-moh friends(every class should have some people like that who suck in their MT but rock in english)

I won't say read more, cos reading more only improves your english indirectly since you gotta have interest to last in the first place. Just do more vocab logs I guess? Flip through a novel. Don't care about the story, just pick out all the cheem words and make sure you know how to apply them into your compos.

My english is sub par, 18/30 for compo =/ But speaking to my friends in english really does help. I'm having O's this year too, by the way =)
