O'levels Combined humanities (SS/H) -MY STORY FOR A1-

Hey forum users! Would like to share with you guys/girls something funny i guess..?
Got my O's result not long ago, and got A1 for Comb.Humans(SS/H) (SUPER HAPPY )! Point is, I usually attain C5-C6 grade during internal examinations(im from a neighbourhood school) which means the paper shouldn't be so difficult, i just dislike SS which probably pulled down the overall grade..?
Furthermore, i spend only 2 days( 2 FRICKIN DAYS OUT OF 365DAYS!!!) on revising SS/H by reading TB before the actual O level papers(didn't really border doing papers). I personally disliked practicing for this subject, as it is very meticulous, u have to write essays and understand sources(pain in the arse).
So when O levels began, I didn't really cared much about this subject( decided to spend more time on math and science and it paid off, scored distinctions )
The funny thing is, i didn't complete the SS paper(left last SBQ question blank = 7 marks gone), therefore was expecting B4 AT MOST and I will be very very happy if i attained that. I still remembered a week before the O level started, i managed to complete ONLY 1 set of prelim paper and passed it to my teacher for marking, and i got 7/25 for SBQ 15/25 for SEQ .. which isn't very good.
Therefore I sort of come to the conclusion that style of writing for comb.humans is kind of more important than the level of your inferential skills. Hope my silly story can serve as an inspiration to those people that dislike this subject. I am not very good in this subject and totally disliked it but still did not give up(sort of) , so please do not give up and totally abandon this subject as you are reaching the finishing line very soon!(PERSEVERE!!!!)
PS. Had some friends who actually practiced and studied very hard for this subject, doing essays and other school prelim papers.. but still scored a B3 (3% Distinction rate for Comb.Humans(SS/H) for my school)
If a slacker like me can get an A1, why can't U? There is still hope!

So please feel free to PM me any inquiries or questions you people have (regardless of any subject) and I will use the best of my abilities to help you!

Well in case you didn't know, humanities subjects are the easiest to obtain distinctions for people who are pro at humanities, especially pure geography as the A2 mark grade is significantly much lower as compared to Maths and Sciences.

Re: O'levels Combined humanities (SS/H) -MY STORY FOR A1-

[SIZE="3"]Hopefully this is able to be of good help to the 2014 Secondary 4/5 Batch taking O levels (SS/H). I agree with ConfusedTeen's point of view as I had a similar experience myself before during the O levels 2 years ago. My (SS/H) grades jumped from a C6 to a A1 after learning the skills and know-how to tackle the questions.

I understand that many students dislike SS/EH because many schoolteachers fail to make their lessons interesting to engage the students. Moreover, combined humanities is a subject I find personally discouraging to practice. Unlike Sciences and Math, you cant use the answer key to tangibly measure your progress and grade. Moreover, its always a pain to practice Combined humanities paper as you gotta write a tonne of arguments or essays. I can truly empathise the problems that all of you are facing. Personally, my grade for Combined Humanities had always fluctuated between the D7 and C5 mark range, often relying on a stroke of luck to pass.

Miraculously, I managed to master the essence for writing essays. The writing for Combined Humanities should be direct and connectors should always be used. Do ask yourself while writing "Will the existence of this sentence added boost my overall grade?"
Always write based on this question to avoid overelaboration which can waste precious time and compromise your explaination. Refrain from leaving explainations at the last to prevent weak explainations. Do always remember to link back to the question issue after that.

For source based questions, this is trickier as it relies on the student's understanding of the skills needed with the addition of being exam smart. For example, it is absolutely crucial to extract the right and most obvious piece of evidence so as to simplify the process of justification for your inference or cross reference. This exam skill is crucial in Inference or Reliability type of question of which cross reference might be needed.

It is also exam smart to constantly refer to the background information to understand what is the underlying issue. The papers are set in such a way that all the sources have an underlying issue in common and more commonly, students who are weaker in humanities would tend to be oblivious to the issue. Understanding that issue will give you a major advantage over other students as sources have a stand that is either for or against the issue and understanding the issue will help you to decipher the relationship between sources which can be useful for Compare and Contrast questions.

Hopefully the tips I gave above have provided value to your cohort and many future cohorts to come.
I humbly welcome any questions or inquries you may have. Feel free to PM me or post your questions on the forum and I will help you with my utmost ability

Haha, i have a way to make your revision more simple. Rather than memorising pure facts and regurgitating them. Do learn how to explain from main points or main factors. Learn to understand cause and effect concepts which can help greatly in your revision. I will do my best to help you if post or pm me specific question.

Haha, i have a tip for studying content though. Its helpful to make mindmaps to understand causal and effect concepts within the topic. Instead of memorising whatever you have studied and regurgitating them. Understanding the concepts will help as you will be able to justify how the factor is related to the question. This will largely ease the process of elaboration, cutting down the need to memorise content. If you have specific questions, do pm me or post it on forum. I will do my best to help

Re: O'levels Combined humanities (SS/H) -MY STORY FOR A1-

I dont have the exact questions so i am unsure. Themes are most likely going to be tested so do not go all in on one topic. Avoid thinking that studying authoritarian regimes would definitely be spot on as many students have fallen into that trap.

Yeah, you covered the theme on peace establishment, authoritarian regimes and the rise and end of cold war. So i guess its pretty safe provided you have internalised the content
