Olympics: Singapore's Lee Wung Yew begins new shooting style in Beijing

SINGAPORE: Lee Wung Yew has been shooting for gold for Singapore since the 1980s.

He turned 42 in March, but age does not seem to have affected his marksmanship.

Last December, he made it 15 gold medals at the SEA Games, after he helped Singapore to top spot in the men's trap team event in Korat, Thailand.

A couple of weeks later, he became the first Singapore shooter to qualify for an Olympics on merit, when he finished third in the men's trap at the 11th Asian Shooting Championship in Kuwait.

Next Friday, when the 25-strong Singapore athletic contingent marches out of the National Stadium in Beijing at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics, Lee will be the oldest and most experienced member of the squad.

After nine SEA Games and two Sportsman of the Year trophies (1990, 1998), one would have thought he would have stuck to the old adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Not Lee, though.

Setting his sights on the 2008 Olympics, he did the near-unthinkable, chucking aside virtually all that he knew about trap shooting to re-learn all over again under top Italian coach Marcello Dradi, early last year.

"It was quite a crazy, radical move," said Lee.

"It was just five months before the qualifying window for the 2008 Olympics opened and it seemed crazy for a seasoned shooter like me to undergo a total change, from my shooting style to my equipment.

"I had to un-learn and re-learn everything over a span of 15 months. Basically, whatever I'd learnt through trial and error over the last 20-odd years had to be thrown out."

Trying to adapt to the new methods and the philosophy of Italian taskmaster Dradi - who coached India's 2006 world champion Manavjit Sandhu and 2004 Olympic silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore - proved a shock for the veteran.

Making frequent trips - each lasting from 10 days to several weeks - to Dradi's training base in Massari, a town near Bologna, Italy, was the easy part.

The hard part was parting with his trusty three-year-old Beretta shotgun and getting used to a whole new approach with an unfamiliar Perazzi MX2000.

"Marcello stressed a lot on my shooting stance and the timing," said Lee.

"Every shot I took was carefully structured and prepared, unlike the past, when I'd just turn up and shoot.

"His attention to detail is also very great. He would make me shoot the same target at the same trajectory over and over again until I got it right.

"It was very intense and there were moments of friction between us."

But Lee added: "Marcello also knew when to take it easy. Sometimes, he would take all of us into town and head for this spa for elderly people for us to relax."

The fruits of his labour are obvious.

While Lee competed at the 1996 Atlanta Games (joint-20th) and 2004 Athens Olympics (joint-21st) through wildcard entries, he will be in Beijing on merit, after his performance in Kuwait last year.

His score at the Asian Shooting Championship was 133. This year, Lee has averaged between 113 and 115 out of 125 targets.

In May, he shot 118 in a competition in Italy.

He believes a score of 122 or 123 will be good enough for a place in the final six in Beijing.

That will be a perfect way to possibly end his Olympic adventure.

"I don't know if it is going to be my last Olympics. It will depend on what resources are available," said Lee, a physical education teacher at Innova Junior College.

"But if there are better (trap) shooters, then I would be happy to make way for them."

Lee will begin his men's trap quest on Aug 9 in the qualifiers, with the final scheduled the following day. - TODAY

He was my relief English teacher (trainee) in Commonwealth Sec Sch in 1993. Our 1st question, "Mr Lee, how did you get so tall?" Hahaha.

All the best to him! Jia you!
