Total SGC$: 18.00 | P6 Maths Question
Hi, I recently came across a P6 maths question on a blog as follows: Jack bought some pens and erasers for a total of $100.10. He spent $9.10 more on the pens than erasers. Each pen costs $3.70 more than each eraser. Jack bought 6 times more erasers than pens. How much does a pen cost?
The answer provided in the blog seems to suggest that there are 7 portions of erasers as compared to 1 portion of pens because "Jack bought 6 times more erasers than pens".
Now, I'm quite confused. Wouldn't "6 times more" mean there are 6 times more of one item as compared to another?? Why should there be 7 portions of erasers and 1 portion of pens??
Any views are appreciated. Thanks.

Any views are appreciated. Thanks. | I think your interpretation is right. There should be 6 portions of erasers per portion of pen. Which means, if there are 5 pens, there should be 6x5 = 30 erasers. The answer is probably wrong.
(Or the question is wrong).

i'm very sure it's the blog's mistaken.... 6 times = for every 1 pen there are 6 erasers

Thanks for the replies.
I have copied the question and answer from the blog: A simple P6 maths question
Jack bought some pens and erasers for a total of $100.10. He spent $9.10 more on the pens than erasers. Each pen costs $3.70 more than each eraser. Jack bought 6 times more erasers than pens. How much does a pen cost?
cost of erasers = (100.10-9.10)/2= $45.50
cost of pens = 45.50 + 9.10 = $54.60
cost of 1x of eraser = 45.50/7 = $6.50
difference of eraser and pen = 54.60-6.50 = $48.10
48.10/3.70 = 13 pens
54.60/13 = $4.20
This is what puzzles me. If the eraser is 6 times more, the total quantity of eraser would be 13*6=78. When you divide the total cost of eraser ($45.50) by 78, you don't get a nice number (answer is $0.583333). But if the eraser is 7 times more, the total qty is 13*7=91. Total eraser cost divided by 91 gives you $0.50.
When I first read the question, my impression is 6 times. Not 7 times. I have checked this with many ppl and they all share the same thought. If that is the case, then there is fundamental flaw with this P6 maths question then.
As a parent, I would be worried. This is a classic poor English used in Maths problem solving question which the student could be wrongly faulted.

Don't worry, PSLE's questions are fine and are vetted through carefully. In the event that they do have some sort of error in it, that question will be nullified.

It said 6 times more, not 6 times.
E.g A coke is 1 dollar. If 6 times more exp, then is 7.
If 6 time the original, then it's 6 bucks.
English is a tricky thing.
MY assumption is, the setter English standard is epic phail.
The maths is not my concern

This is tricky.
Isn't the use of the word "more" to compare one thing to another? Just like the word "less".
If I'm going to phrase the question this way "There are 6 times less pens than erasers". It would mean there are lesser pens than erasers by 6 times, right? Same goes with this statement "There are 6 times more erasers than pens". It would also mean there are more erasers than pens by 6 times.

that is correct. its 6x vs 1x.
If the teacher wanted 7x and 1x, this should have been it:
The difference between the number of erasers and pens is six times that of the number of pens.(assuming the number of pens is the stated 1x quantity.)
hope this helps.
