A palace in the heart of Korea

A palace in the heart of Korea

SEOUL: During the G20 summit meeting in Seoul in November, one of the major attractions for the delegates and media, was the Gyongbok palace - the largest palace in the country.

Gyungbok palace

Built in 1395, Gyongbok gung (Gyungbok palace) was the main royal palace of the Josun Dynasty.

Its name means the Palace Greatly Blessed by Heaven, and it has remained in the hearts of many Koreans for decades.

However, like many monuments, the history of the palace was hardly blessed. It was completely burnt during Japan's invasion from 1592 to 1598.

It was rebuilt in 1868, but many parts of the palace were again dismantled during Japan's colonial rule over Korea for 35 years from 1910.

Since the 1990s, there have been efforts to restore the palace to its original glory and this included works on the Gwanghwamun - the main and largest gate to the palace.

On August 15 this year, which marked the anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan, Gyongbok Palace opened its doors to the public.

It is usually opened during the day, but for four days during the G20 summit, the doors to the palace remained opened to the public at night.

Since then, the palace gates have returned to its daylight opening hours, but its special status is now firmly established with foreign and local visitors.

Beatrice Hadjaje, a tourist, said: "It is my first time in Korea so I asked some of my friends what is the most interesting place to see, what is the most representative of the culture of this country and they told me to come here, the royal palace and I can imagine how it was one century ago."

Korean Hwang Ok Rae feels that the palace is a source of national pride.

"This is our country's palace. It's our Korean pride. And so I come here often. I don't get tired of coming even when I see it again and again. Its culture and history is the heart of our people. And so I think it's good. I am here with my grandchild. She is in elementary five and so I wanted to explain to her about our culture and heritage."

While the structure may be rebuilt, the centuries-old spirit and glory of Gyongbok Palace have been revived amidst the bustle of the capital.
