Parental challenges... Then and now

Parental challenges... Then and now

In the 80s, parents might…
Be too busy to watch over their kids’ behaviour.
Have problems keeping their kids occupied and not boring them into looking for fun outside.
Indulge their kids too much by giving them $10 to spend at the bowling centre or arcade.

Today, parents might…
Be too busy to watch over their kids’ behaviour.
Have problems supervising their kids’ actions on the Internet, even if the kids stay home.
Indulge their kids too much by giving them iPods and PSPs.

In the 80s, kids might…
Indulge in underage smoking at fast-food outlets.
Indulge in underage sex at clandestine love nests under the Pan-Island Expressway.
Get entangled in gang fights at popular youth spots like Far East Plaza during mass activities like breakdancing.
Hang out with the “Centrepoint Kids”, rival packs of teenagers that amass at shopping centres, play loud punk music and create trouble.
Hang out with “unattached youths” – those under 25 who are not schooling or working – at void decks, and pick up glue-sniffing and drug abuse from them.

Today, kids might…
Buy contraband cigarettes and party drugs from their friends who are part of a gang at school.
Indulge in underage sex at cheap hotels or in each other’s homes, when the parents are working outside during the day.
Get recruited into gangs at school or around the school perimeter during the day.
Get recruited into gangs at popular “heartland malls” in the new towns.
Hang out with gang friends at void decks to sniff glue and take drugs.

Re: Parental challenges... Then and now

Parenting challenges had been there since the beginning of humankind. Only difference is that the challenges is difference from one generation to another.
Let's start at the early age.
Am not say, previous generation challenges is not as tough as current, but whatever it is, like it or not, it's still a challenges for parent and teen likewise. The top challenges still remain the same, like sex, drug and gang.

Parenting now being seem worst due, to both parents have to go out and work and leave the kids in the care of grandparent, in laws and others institution. Maybe for some, to make the children keep still, advise and care is being replace by modern gadget (hp, psp etc)not realising that these gadget provide lots of negativities than goods like violent games on psp.

Being kids once, I do recalled, to get what I want is to do what parent don't like to hear, that is CRY. And kids then and now still use this ancient weapon to get their needs.

As children evolve to teen, we seem to think that we had outcome our parent in term of IQ. Raise our voice against them when they disagree with us seem to be normal and make us look "cool". What we see on internet (violence and sex), pressure us to want to do it without relising the conscequences.

We argue with everybody, sibling, parent, teachers etc. School rule seem to resticted our RIGHTS as a humand being. The difinition of FREEDOM means, LEAVE ME ALONE, DON'T ASK ME I'M GOING OR WHAT I DO.

Parents RESPONSIBILITY IS TO PROVIDE WHAT their children WANT, NOT WHAT they NEED. Scare of their precious teen might get what their want but doing something illegal, they succumb to their demands. They fail to see that they can't provide their keep all the times and infect what they gave their kids actually is most likely FAILURE in life to come.

Previously, parents welcome school punishment if their kids is wrong, but now their dicipinary action is question. Some even go to the extent of suing the teacher or school. Teacher are downgrade to hold the responsibilities like a maid. Only difference, maid clean and cook for the house, teacher just teach nothing else.

Since the begining of the human generation, parents always provide the recipee to failure to their kids. Am not saying that all parents do that, it's just that those NEGATIVITIES provider exceed the POSITIVE.
