Parentsí toolkit on character development launched

BY
AMANDA LEE

SINGAPORE -Some 4,000 sets of the first-of-its-kind Parentsí Toolkit on Character Development were given out at the launch of the toolkit by Acting Minister for Social and Family Development Chan Chun Sing at the TOUCH Family Festival 2013 earlier today (May 27).

The Parentsí Toolkit - produced by TOUCH Character Development of TOUCH Community Services - contains practical ideas and strategies to help parents in developing positive character values in their children.

The Parentsí Toolkit is targeted at parents of primary school children and contains three booklets. One of the booklets is on Performance Values, which helps to develop children in the areas of responsibility, punctuality and self-discipline.

The Parents’ Toolkit is targeted at parents of primary school children and contains three booklets. One of the booklets is on Performance Values, which helps to develop children in the areas of responsibility, punctuality and self-discipline.
Gosh! They got it wrong again! *Facepalms*

Character development and inculcation of good values should begin much earlier before the kids go into primary schools. And it starts with the parents themselves. Parents must be examples and role models of the values they want to inculcate in their kids. Character development doesn't work the same way as teaching subjects in schools where it's taught one-way by adults to kids!

And those "smart" scholars title the booklets with names such as Performance Values *rolls-eyes* Really! Performance? HELLO!! Kids are not workers and employees when it comes to character development!! Values shouldn't even be categorised at all!

What messages are they sending to parents? And they got it wrong too. Does it mean that when parents want their kids to improve on their performance (with regards to work, study etc), then only it's to be developed? *Triple SIGH* Totally disappointed.
