Paul's fame rubs off on octopuses at S'pore Underwater World

SINGAPORE: Spain may have won, but one unexpected star of the 2010 World Cup is Paul the Octopus.

It got eight out of eight predictions correct.

Its fame is rubbing off on its distant cousins at Singapore Underwater World.

They've become instant stars and are a hit with visitors.

But those who buy the argument that these creatures may have special powers may be disappointed.

Paul appears to have chosen the flags of countries whose colours resemble its favourite food - fish and little snakes.

Still, experts say octopuses are highly intelligent and trainable.

Anthony Chang, curator, Singapore Underwater World, says: "Some octopuses have demonstrated that they can open and close jars, they can navigate a maze. For example, a complex maze, the octopus can go through it to find food at the end of the maze. And through repeated trials, the animal can learn this behaviour and complete the task a lot faster than before."

Over in Little India, Mani the parakeet has lost some of its shine, after predicting wrongly that the Netherlands would win.

Its owner laments that business has gone down and and life returns to pre-World Cup days.
