Perception of overtime (OT)

Just like to find out you guys' perceptions of OT. Is it necessary or just simply desirable from your perspective? What factors would prompt you to work OT, should the need arises?

Re: Perception of overtime (OT)

in Japan, overtime is compulsory... people who goes back right after working hours are considered lazy.. lol

then again, it depends on which comp u work for.. like mentioned, Jap companies can be a killer

in US, people who goes back right after working hours is efficient. The jap company i used to work for shuns OT because paying OT wages is a cost factor. avoid OT if u can.

Re: Perception of overtime (OT)

Personally for e don't depend on OT for financial survival.. There was time when i first join this company, lets call it company A. I was replacing an engineer that just left.

So after 3 months during my probation appraisal, the GM told me they not satisfy by my work cos i everyday complete my job ontime while the previous engineer every day stay for ot to complete the job.

My reply is simple to him. its quality time vs quantity time. I complete the same job in 8 hrs against the previous which took 10 to 12 hrs. If you can't see that i'm saving the company for paying my unnecessary OT then this place is not for me. I quit the following week

Not satisfied because you're efficient? That's a nonsense company.

This concept of working less to be more efficient is a relatively new concept adopted by the latest tech companies in silicon valley. In many traditional companies and even MNCs, the appearance of being hardworking is sometimes more important than how much work you actually accomplish.

Really? I always thought that the most important is the amount of work you do, not the amount of time spent doing the work.

Re: Perception of overtime (OT)

Some bosses they define hardworking by the number of hours you spend your time at work rather than your efficiency which simply not my style..

The reality is that you need to 'wayang' a lot these days, especially in many bureaucratic organisations such as the civil service. The perception you give when you OT is that not only are you hardworking, but you are prepared to put your work over and above family and other personal commitments. Personally, I find these a ridiculous but inescapable practice of work. A solution to this problem also requires a lot of 'wayang', i.e. constantly demonstrating to your boss that you are achieving results and not being hesitant in taking credit, only then would everyone feel justified that you can leave on time. It is an effective but not necessarily popular way and whatever choice you make, it is still the lesser of 2 evils

Re: Perception of overtime (OT)

For me I'm usually happy to do overtime. I'm quite passionate about my job and anyway, my pay isn't great so any extra cash I can make while enjoying myself and doing something fulfilling is well-appreciated. Besides, where I come from, overtime is difficult to come by. We only get to do overtime if the day's situation demands it and / or we're specifically asked to do overtime.

Well, it is definitely refreshing to hear from someone who enjoys OT what do you do as your day job anyway? Have you ever thought of getting a night job/stay at home freelance job to supplement your income?

Re: Perception of overtime (OT)

Well, for those with families, understandably OT is a dreadful chore. So how about a question, for guys, are you glad that you can use RT sessions now to 'siam' OT? For the girls, would you be glad to use your newborn as an excuse to do so too?

Re: Perception of overtime (OT)

In my opinion, OT is considered inefficient. The people chat all day and only recognized that it is time to go back home then they start to clear their work.

If they really work all the way until evening and even need to do OT. It is time to hire a new manpower or to consider if the task given is appropriate.

Seriously, my brain is already dead by 4:30 pm. I dont know how people is able to work overtime.

I have seen people work OT all the time. What is on their screen during day time is all youtube, facebook and other webi

They term your job as a professional so you can work OT with no pay.

i heard full-time people work OT with no pay while part-time has a 1.5 time pay for every hour earn. in some cases,part-time has advantages over the full-time..unfortunately,the pay in singapore is low while things are increasing in prices..
