Pitcher Plant

The Singapore pitcher plant...

Named after the gardening event in Singapore, the hybrid from the Sri Lankan based nursery, Borneo Exotics, is known as Nepenthes "Gardentech".

A very vigorous hybrid that can adapt to our climate in a very short time!

The mature pitcher looks like this:

Woah, those are not roots!

They are the "soil", potting media is the term for it...
They are dried sphagnum moss which have great water retention capabilities....
They can be obtained from local nurseries and flower shops...

Pitcher plants generally catch insects. It works like a pitfall trap where insects are lured to the delicious nectar and lose their footing on the slippery sides... They are den drowned and digested!

The largest pitcher plant, Nepenthes Rajah, was recorded that small mammals like rodents are found inside the pitcher! But of course, that is very rare!

Haha again, they are not roots! Those are the "soil", sphagnum moss are excellent in retaining water and provide the humidity they needed. The dried unsoaked version is found in many nurseries and flowershops:

This kind of "soil", we call it potting media.. is nutrient-free and they absorbed 10 times more water than its own weight... The dried sphagnum moss is ow a living plant in bog like habitats.. and carnivorous plants are usually found in these areas... So potting up carnivorous plants in this moss is the most ideal, since CPs cannot survive in normal potting soil because of the high content of minerals and nutrients!

Yup. I snap it with my Canon EOS 1000D camera. Its so amazing to see that plants evolved themselves to catch insects to supplement the lack of nutrients in the soil!

Another pitcher plant I recently acquired...

Nepenthes Veitchii "Golden Peristome" From Borne Exotics again, this plant was named by a famous botanist , Veitch. The pitchers are big and the peristome aka "mouth" is very beautiful!

This is still a young plant and has yet develop those beautiful pitchers!

Mature pitcher look like this:

heh~
i always believe that originals are more beautiful by hybrids...
probably because they are created by mother nature [not really a great believer of god here]

and abt the dangerous thingy~
yeap pitcher plants arent dangerous~
unless u're small enough to slip and fall inside and never able to come out again...

however its quite interesting how life can develop inside pitcher plants too!
like mosquitoe larvae, tadpoles, etc~

plants that may pose true danger to us would be a venus fly trap...
they actually capture and trap their prey in 'claw'-like structures...

even if you can pry yourself out [which most likely you can] you may still get your skin punctured or scratched or a very unserious infection on your skin [which can only cause temporary itching]

^ω^

huh? Really? While I was at the nursery, I still played around with it to make the thing close up. Must test if it does its job, didn't know it would cause infection.
