Portal to engage Dads

Portal to engage Dads

EVEN though schools in Singapore run activities that engage parents, Dads don't seem to be involved all that much.

They only make up less than 30 per cent of total participation in most activities, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) last year.

The reasons schools cited for fathers staying away include being busy at work and not wanting to be involved in what they see as a woman's domain.

The survey, which involved 218 primary and secondary school administrators on parental involvement, found that father participation was especially low in parent support groups and parent volunteer programmes.

To address the problem, the Dads for Life movement on Thursday launched a Fathers@Schools programme and a new website to encourage father-child bonding - www.dadsforlife.sg .

Participating schools of the Fathers@Schools programme will get up to $2,000 annually to set up support groups for fathers and organise activities for them, such as father-child camps.

The website, which can be found at www.dadsforlife.sg, serves as a resource portal for fathers, individuals and communities supporting fathers. Users who log onto the site can access easy-to-read research and parenting articles, discuss father-related issues on an online forum and gain practical tips on fatherhood.
