Preparing for the
First Date
Be Open-Minded
This is your first date and you fantasize that your dream date would look like Miss Singapore. Then you meet her. Alamak! Disappointed. She is not what you imagine her to be. Ken shared one of his blind date experiences:
"In secondary school I got to know a girl from a pen pal column and she suggested we meet up since we write to each to her very often and we always have things to talk about. I agreed.
We met up at a fast food restaurant for lunch. Waited for half an hour sitting alone, then a girl turn up. I got a shock. From what I picture her to be and looking at the small neo-print sticker she sent, she was totally different. She was over-weight, pimply and doesn't resemble the neoprint at all.
She then confessed while we've having lunch, that she took her cousin's picture and send me because she couldn't find a picture of herself…When she took of her sunglasses, I almost chock and laugh out loud - She was cross-eyed"
The moral of the story: don't form a mental image of her. Don't have high expectations.
K.I.S.S. (Keep it Short and Sweet)
Keep your first date short - not more than an hour. Don't go for a movie or dinner. How can you watch and talk at the same time in the theatre? Dinner doesn't provide an easy escape route. Lunch is fine. If you are not interested in her, the end of lunch provides you with a quick exit, but if you are interested in her, you can arrange to meet up again.
It's About Her - Not You
Keep your conversation light and positive. Don't talk about yourself all the time. Focus on her, not yourself. She is not your therapist. So don't tell her your secrets or your problems. She is not your pastor either. So don't confess to her about your 'EX-perience'. John shared what went wrong when his conversation was so one-sided that the dating interaction turned out to be more like a dating interview:
"We met at Plaza Singapura for a movie and lunch. Movie was quiet and lunch was….horrible…because of me…It was like an interview in the end, with me asking many questions about her. This put her off. And till today I felt silly."
Annie complaint that some guys just keep talking about themselves and not giving her a chance to talk.
Remember the keywords OPEN-KISS-HER. Starting on the right footing on your first date could open doors to more tangos to come.
