Proper way to burn incense powder indoors

Hi, recently, my mother has started burning incense powder indoors, once in the day and once at night. The brand is 'Zambala Buddhist Incense Powder'. Does anyone know the correct procedure for burning it?

I am quite worried as we hear loud knocking at the front door of our house at night a few days after we started burning the incense powder.

Re: Proper way to burn incense powder indoors

My mother was introduced to this by a buddhist friend, should be buddhism. She burnt the incense powder once in the day and once at night while chanting a verse that a friend taught her, and left it in front of the door.

The knocking sounds like the metal lock being pulled and hit against the door repeatedly. It continued for a while and then stopped. We did not dare to see who it was that was knocking as it was about 3 plus at night. I think the smell of the incense powder had already subsided by then.

Could it just be a human knocking?

Re: Proper way to burn incense powder indoors

I think you should go and see who is knocking if it persists again. At least you will know if it is some troublemakers or really those "thing" that is doing it. Don't be afraid, if it is knocking your gate and door means it cannot come in. So at least you will know what to do next like to call the police or the spiritual adviser for help.

Re: Proper way to burn incense powder indoors

If I am not wrong, by right Buddhist do not offer incense sticks.
But it is the taoist's practice.
In Singapore, a lot of people are in between Buddhism and Taoism.

May I know what is the purpose of the chant?
There are different purposes for different Mantra, Katha, etc.
Maybe you can ask your mother.

For advice, please do not do anything that you are not sure.
Or chant anything that you are not sure.

I am not very knowledgeable but I hope the pro here and give you some advice.

How come you did not ask the "friend" whom taught yr mother this incense burning or the chanting? Does she even know what she is chanting? Usually mainsteam "God" do not receive incense at night. (Except for 24hrs temple) In fact after the sun goes down.

If it is not police or one of yr neighbours complaining abt the smell, it could be that the ritual was perform to invite something to yr house? In this case dun open the door. It will be deemed as an "open invitation". Some ppl resort to ANYTHING for wealth and may have tot that they are being nice by sharing with their close friends thinking that it will benefit them also. Be careful. Ask yr mother not to dabble in things that she is not clear of. Find out more from that "friend".

contary to popular beliefs, the proper time to burn incense and other stuff is after midnight.

once at noon and once at midnight

Yes, we actually do... but the problem here is the purpose.
As you said, one should know the meaning of the gatha. Also, just chanting something and burning incense is NOT a good idea.
First thing should be taking refuge and setting up a simple altar. Then one can chant and burn incense in front of said altar.
Even then one should know the meaning of the gathas.

In the most positive case, just some "lost soul" wanted to have a share of the merits gained by chanting.

On a side note: I have spiritual activity on and near my altar also, but I know what the deal is about, so I don't freak out. If you know what is going on, no need to be scared.

It might not be a bad thing if the TS's mother is chanting something positive and the spirit is here to ask for merits.
But the TS don't even know what is his mother chanting and this might be a big problem.

That is exactly what I try to say
If the knocking is there every time, then good chances it is a spirit. Then it depends on what the chant is.
Otherwise can be anything haha

I see. Thai or local Chinese practice? You have been practicing this style and chanting?
I must be ignorant then. *Blush* Thai temples close so early I personally do not have the opportunity of experiencing this particular pattern of incense offering. And local temple offer incense around the clock if it is open. Super yin and super yang timing. Muz be good for you.

Please further share why it is the "proper" time?

it is chinese practise
it is the proper time because it is the time of "taking-over shift"
most of the time, the gods or deities does not reside in the statues
they employ guards to watch for them
in case of emergency, they will come back

so we burn incense and josspaper at that time...

and we maintain the incense burning by the 24 hours incense
the incense smoke is the channel to the gods
