Punggol gets foretaste of street racing
Residents and visitors are treated to thrills of go-karting and drifting at carnival

IT WAS almost as if the Formula One street race in Singapore had arrived early.

For nine hours yesterday, the roar of souped-up engines filled the air, mingling with the smell of burning rubber.

There were crash barriers, chequered flags and even road closures.

There were no state-of-the-art F1 machines, of course.

But there were plenty of high-speed thrills for more than 5,000 Punggol residents and visitors, who thronged the first K1 Motorsport Carnival yesterday.

The event featured go-kart rides and sports cars in drifting demonstrations - enough to whet the appetite of motor sports fans ahead of the F1 Singapore Grand Prix in September.

'We don't want F1 to be just an experience for a few people,' said Minister for Defence and Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MP Teo Chee Hean, who was the guest of honour.

'We want to bring the experience of motor sports to the grassroots and to the heartlands.

'When motor sports do come to Singapore in a bigger way, more people would feel an affinity for it.'

Yesterday's carnival was jointly organised by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), the Singapore Motor Sports Association (SMSA), motor sports consultancy CS Racing and the People's Association.

Similar events will be staged at eight other locations - Ayer Rajah-West Coast constituency, Keat Hong constituency, Sembawang GRC, East Coast GRC, Tanjong Pagar GRC, Geylang Serai constituency, Marine Parade GRC and a Safra club house.

The entire series will culminate with a karting race on the actual Marina F1 circuit in July.

Said SMSA president Tan Teng Lip: 'Most racers start with go-karting - that is their first contact with motorsports.

'If we want to promote the sport to the heartlands, go-karts are the best medium.'

Residents like Mohammad Shariff, who turned up for a taste of motor racing, were not disappointed.

'It's not every day that you get to see sports cars at full speed on a public road,' said the 42-year-old electrician.

The go-kart experience also impressed the minister, who tried his hand in one.

'It was good fun - I'm usually a very safe driver,' he quipped.

Actual cars or just go-carts?

Should be real cars. I saw them on TV, real cars doing the drift while executing a U-turn.

I was there. The cars are burning rubber while executing the drift.
