Rasa Sentosa makeover gives tourism a boost

SINGAPORE - Tourism in Sentosa is being given an additional boost with hotels on the island stepping up their game.

One such example is the $80-million makeover that Shangri-La's Rasa Sentosa Resort has undergone in a bid to raise the stakes and draw in a crowd.

The upgrading was timely, said the resort's general manager, Mr Ben Bousnina. "When we knew that the Government was stepping up efforts to boost tourism in Singapore and on Sentosa island, I think it was important for us to raise our standards and carry out a major renovation and create a new destination."

Rasa Sentosa Resort, the only resort in Singapore with a beachfront location, is one of 11 hotels on Sentosa but Mr Bousnina said it was not overly concerned with competition.

The presence of big players like Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) and other hotels has raised the profile of Sentosa island. "Everybody is talking about it," he said.

The number of hotel rooms on Sentosa is not expected to go beyond 3,000, said Mr Bousnina. His resort has 454 rooms, RWS has 1,850.

RWS' assistant director of communications, Mr Robin Goh, said: "Our hotels are operating at near full capacity and the re-opening of Shangri-La's Rasa Sentosa Resort is great news for guests exploring new options to stay on the island."

Since the opening of RWS, there has been a significant increase in the number of visitors to Sentosa island, he said.

With the opening of even more attractions and RWS' wide range of entertainment offerings, Sentosa is now seen as Singapore's premier tourist destination, Mr Goh added.

Children headed for a stay at Rasa Sentosa Resort - it will open next Tuesday - will be cheered by its many family-friendly facilities, such as a specially customised kids buffet table. Other recreational facilities include The Flying Trapeze.

The director of the Tourism Academy @ Sentosa, Mr Philip Lim Thiam Lee, said the resort made the right move to gear up.

Tourism would continue to enjoy a healthy growth and Singapore could see a record 15 million visitors by 2015, he added.
