Reading blocks of text

I researched on techniques on how to speed read. I discovered the way to speed read is to read blocks of text at a time instead of reading word for word.

Is reading blocks of text even possible?

I'm only seeing stars when I look at a body of text without examining its words.

Or am I missing something here? Is speed reading only to get the outline of what a passage is about? To get the outline I usually only read the first and second sentence of the paragraph to get a brief idea of it, but again, I'm reading the sentences word for word.

Focus on the middle of each line instead of reading word for word.
I read pretty fast but i kinda do a half word for word and half middle reading

hmm...Okay.

My reading speed is no where near fast.I only read about 230 words per minute, word for word, assuming the text is not as difficult as those harder to read articles from Newsweek/Time.

Should I be working on reading word for word faster?

I screwed up my English O Level this year ?!?!??!?!

I didn't finish Section 2 Paper 1 and didn't do the summary properly; summary was tough. I don't wanna get a C5 again?! Many people said the paper was easy and I'm worried that I'll get a C5 after moderation.

So wasted not to finish section 2 paper 1. It's not difficult.

Can forget about going to JC if I get a C5 for English

Re: Reading blocks of text

what's the point of speed reading an article when at the end of the verse, you know nuts about what you read.

Re: Reading blocks of text

One of my teacher can speed read an essay of 2 pages in under 10secs and still can tell the student what mistakes/good points he/she did. Uber cool.

Re: Reading blocks of text

Reading super fast or being the first to read finish an article doesn't earn you anything

2pages with single line paragraph and a font size of 14 you meant ?

Yeah it doesn't earn me anything but it;s useful when devouring large amounts of information. You'll also be able to understand better cause more information is retained in your short term memory.

Your teacher is just analyzing the structure of the essay and its brief content I guess. That's easy to do in a short time but you'll miss out some stuff which you didn't notice. I don't think she'll point out grammar mistakes or spelling mistakes.

Picking out keywords can be slow and keywords need connecting words between them to make sense.Picking out keywords also requires you to read the whole text before you know what they are (or get someone else to do this for you) .I have no idea how you read fast just by picking up keywords and making sense out of them.

Than she already knows what to expect. That's why she did it so quickly. She only need to read parts of your sentences that are important not all. That's what I think about why humanities teachers read so quickly. My former social studies teacher can read incredibly fast too. I give her my SBQ answer. Within a few seconds, she mark finish already. -_-"
