Default Reality Check - Alcohol Poisoning

An overdose of alcohol puts the “toxic” in intoxication. Binge drinkers, hard partyers and anyone imbibing on a dare should know the stakes are high.

Alcohol can shut down involuntary actions like breathing and gagging.

Ethanol, the active ingredient in alcoholic drinks, does its damage by inhibiting routine brain activity. In high quantity it affects the nerve cells that control breathing, resulting in a condition known as respiratory depression. First breathing becomes shallow and slows drastically. Carbon dioxide accumulates in the bloodstream. Then you go into coma, stop breathing and die.

The gag reflex is also compromised by excess ethanol. With no natural response to cough out or repress vomit, many people who die from alcohol poisoning choke to death.

A person may have consumed a fatal dose of alcohol without it being obvious to others.

The consequences of guzzling or drinking many shots in a row will not be immediately apparent. But while the sensation of being drunk is catching up, bottlenecked ethanol saturates the bloodstream and body tissue. A drinker could easily be upright and social with a fatal dose of alcohol already ingested.

Doctors can do little other than keep the patient alive.

There is no known way to shortcut the process of metabolizing alcohol. The body just needs time. Emergency room doctors can’t do much more than help the patient breathe by intubating (inserting a breathing tube), and wait.

The amount required to be poisoned by alcohol varies from one person to the next.

Doctors, like the police, measure intoxication according to blood alcohol concentration. BAC depends on factors like body mass and gender.

In most states, the legal BAC limit for driving is under .08. Incidents of alcohol poisoning are possible around .2. At four times the legal limit—or .32, which a 180-pound male could reach drinking a dozen shots inside of one hour—the average person would be lucky to survive.

Indirect factors can be devastating.
When someone survives an alcohol poisoning, there is little risk of long-term damage. However, associated injuries (from falling out of windows, car crashes) and problems from simultaneous drug use are common.

Permanent brain damage is possible when breathing has stopped or when the airway has been blocked by vomit. Those who survive can also have complications when their stomach acid, belched up and inhaled, goes to work on lung tissue.

drink some alcohol keeps your body warm and improves your blood circulation..but don't drink too much high-alcohol as you'll get heartburn and accumulates toxic in your body..not good
