Re: The Republic Polytechnic discussion thread

I feel you Hwee Pin. Resume building can be very tricky.

Anyway, I've been looking at some pictures and RP's Annual Global Game Jam this year looks really fun! I'm sure a lot of gamers and aspiring game developers are tempted to enroll in RP because of this event.

Re: The Republic Polytechnic discussion thread

Diploma in Marine Science and Aquaculture sounds like an interesting course. Anyone here who's taking this course?

Re: The Republic Polytechnic discussion thread

I'm not a Marine Science student but I know that the future just looked brighter for those who are taking the course. The aquaculture centre was just opened and it is 180 square meters big. I am sure it holds a lot of learning opportunities for RP students.

Re: The Republic Polytechnic discussion thread

I just hope that Republic Polytechnic can improve the WiFi internet connection. I understand that it's free but it's really frustrating especially when time is of the essence.

Aside from the school, I love the whole place. The place is just beautiful and the scenery is breathtaking especially in the quiet hours in the morning.

Don't forget the RP people. I love how RP facilitators are very approachable. Even the non-working staff members are all nice and very helpful.

Huge library - one of the biggest features of RP. Lots, and lots of books, (of course) and a lot of different musical instruments in the library too.

Re: The Republic Polytechnic discussion thread

Although a lot of people are torn about the RP approach, which is PBL or problem-based learning, I am actually in favor of it. I think that it is a great way to learn and it ensures knowledge retention and development of essential skills. It is very time consuming but it is more effective than the traditional approach. What do you guys think?

Re: The Republic Polytechnic discussion thread

Well, in terms of efficiency, it is a great way to learn. It also enables professors to embody the essence of being facilitators. I agree that it is the probably the best approach but I think it should not be applied on all lessons. There are some lessons that are perfect for this approach but it does not make sense on other topics. Just my opinion, though.

Re: The Republic Polytechnic discussion thread

I agree. I think that the learning approach should be flexible. As facilitators, the professors should have the option whether or not to use PBL. Of course there are different factors to consider like the learners, the topic, and the available resources. Of course, when it comes to equipment and devices, there is not an issue about those with RP. However, time is also considered as one of these resources and if the same effect is achieved without exerting too much time on a particular lesson, then it would be much better.

Re: The Republic Polytechnic discussion thread

Flexibility - that's the exact keyword. Thanks Fanita. PBL is actually flexible when you think about it. However, it can be more flexible if the lecturers can choose when to apply this approach and when they can choose to employ more appropriate approach on the day's lesson. I agree that problem-based learning is not the perfect approach for ALL the lessons. RP do not need to stick to it all the time just to be able to claim that they apply PBL. It is actually something that they can claim as long as it is applied in the majority of classes. This approach is not really the enemy. It is a highly beneficial approach when used at the right time.

Re: The Republic Polytechnic discussion thread

@Idreamyou, that is great info on the resume. Very important. What I like most in the diploma course is the way they use the problem based learning. it really prepares you for the workplace environment since it is more application than just theory. I need to check out that resume writing.

Re: The Republic Polytechnic discussion thread

Is it true most of the modules are non-exam based? Meaning you can graduate without taking a single test?

Re: The Republic Polytechnic discussion thread

Hello folks, I'm a graduate from Republic Polytechnic and I finished my NS and currently pursuing my studies in NTU. I guess I can share some of my experiences in RP with y'all. What would y'all like to know?

I forgot to add something, I am a RP staff now. In a sense, I was a RP student and I am a RP staff currently taking my degree in NTU.

Is anyone aware of the percentage of RP students who get into NUS/NTU?

Don't know about NUS/NTU, but there has been a report that they are in fact the highest percentage for all universities.
